Stolen Buick Recovered in Glen Cove Area

A 1962 Buick reported stolen from Hobo Foods in Lumberton on March 3 was found Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in a wooded area of Glen Cove. The left fender and possibly the frame were damaged. The back seat was disturbed and small items including most of Mrs. Smith’s purse contents were taken. The theft was reported to the sheriff’s office, which had no prior DPS bulletin. The couple had to hot wire the car to return home Monday evening.

Don L Hawthorne Seeks Silsbee City Council Place 2

Don L Hawthorne, manager of Caraway Motor Co in Silsbee, announced his candidacy for Place 2 on the Silsbee City Council. He has lived in Silsbee since March 1947, is married with five children, and cites growth since WWII. Hawthorne supports efficient police and fire departments and says candidates should run on merit with departments kept out of campaigns. He commits to listening to others and choosing what is best for the city after weighing all sides.

Absentee Voting Opens for Silsbee City Council Races

Absentee voting for the April 7 Silsbee City Council election runs March 18 to April 3 at City Hall from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The eight candidates drew for ballot positions March 10. Place 1 features Martin McKinney E J Jones and incumbent John J Fordinal Jr. Place 2 lists James L Hines with Herbert Buckett and Don Hawthorne. Place 3 is headed by Elmer McLaughlin with N G Ferrell and an incumbent.

Soldier to be stationed in Germany after home visit

Pte. Rick A Segrest, son of Mr and Mrs Jack Segrest, left March 1 after visiting his parents. He will be stationed in Germany for 18 months with the Army. While home he married Miss Paula Ingles who will join him in Germany later.

Hartman Seeks Lumberton School Board Seat 7

I L Hartman announced his bid for the Lumberton Independent School District Board of Trustees position 7 in the April 4 election. A 43 year old Beaumont Coca Cola Bottling Co. employee and deacon chair, he cites expanding facilities, taxpayer- board understanding, and quality education with equal teaching and fair taxation as goals. He and wife Alice, parents of five, moved to Lumberton in 1965 and four children attend Lumberton schools.

Burglaries Reported in Silsbee This Week

Two burglaries were reported to Silsbee police this week. A break in at the Kirby Memorial Stadium press box was discovered at 6:52 a.m. Sunday with no losses found. A Santa Fe employee said a gas power drill worth $300 was stolen from a railroad tool shed over the weekend. Both cases under investigation.

Kountze Lions Capture State Class AA Basketball Title

Kountze Lions coached by Willie Wilson defeated Taft Greyhounds 75 to 73 to win the State Class AA title at the 50th UIL State Boys tournament in Austin. Anthony Manning scored 33 and James Brannon 25 as the Lions overcame a late Taft rally after a 31-4 season.

Last Rites For Mrs Odessa Caraway Held Today

Funeral services for Mrs. Odessa Caraway wife of Virgil Caraway commissioner of Precinct 5 were set for 2 p m today at the First Baptist Church Rev R E Barclay with Rev Eugene Dickey and Rev A A Drennen officiating Burial followed at Franks Branch Cemetery She died at 6 a m Tuesday in St Elizabeth Hospital Beaumont after a brief illness A Center native she had lived in Beaumont and Silsbee and served on the South Park School Board trustees for 13 years She was active in the First Baptist Church Beaumont Hospital Auxiliary and Silsbee Doctors Hospital Auxiliary and the Silsbee Garden Club Surviving besides her husband are a son Robert Lee Caraway of New York City six brothers and one sister.
