Silsbee councilman John J. Fordinal announces run for a fourth consecutive term as Place 1 council member. He has chaired growth efforts since 1964 as owner of Jay's Five and Ten and member of the Chamber of Commerce and First Baptist Church.
The Houston Ballet will perform in Silsbee at 7 30 p m Friday March 6 in the Junior High auditorium. It is the lone East Texas showing sponsored by the Silsbee Woman's Club and the Silsbee Little Theater with half funding from the Texas Fine Arts Commission touring program. Mrs J C Jeffrey is general chairman with chairmen for tickets hospitality publicity and house. Box office tickets available.
March 7 is the deadline for candidates to file for the Silsbee City Council election set for April 7. City Secretary Jerry D. Jones announced that candidates for three council seats may file at City Hall until 5 p.m. on March 7. Incumbents John J. Fordinal Jr. Place 1 James Hays Place 2 and Dr N G Ferrell Place 3 have filed for re election.
Joyce Wilkinson Atmar aged 18 and her six month old daughter Sharon Kay escaped serious injury when their 196 Dodge overturned on Tuesday March 3 at 11 50 a m. southbound on Hays Road north of Silsbee. They were taken to Silsbee Doctors Hospital for examination and released. Damage to the car was about 600 dollars.
Four burglaries in Silsbee during the weekend and two more in Hardin County were reported. In Silsbee, a Gulf Oil warehouse on North 5th Street yielded $42 from a money bag after a fence cut and a large hole in siding. fingerprints and shoe prints were found. Other incidents included a broken front door handle at Neches Minimax, an attempted home break in on West Avenue J, and an attempted break in on Kirby Street, with juveniles suspected. Two Hardin County burglaries included Doris' Tavern on Old US 96 where $250 in change was taken, and a Bell Service Station in Lumberton with a smashed door window and small change stolen.
Silsbee Chamber of Commerce President Elect W A Barclay Jr announced the appointment of Frank K Rudisaile as Chairman of the Membership and Welcoming Committee for the new year. Rudisaile said the first Membership Committee meeting would be held Monday March 9 with the annual meeting to follow.
Versie Flowers 46, wife of Walter Flowers, announced her candidacy for Hardin County Treasurer subject to the May 2 Democratic Primary. She and her husband, lifelong Hardin County residents, belong to local pioneer families and participate in area church and civic activities.
E. J. Jones of 215 East Avenue J Silsbee announces candidacy for City Council Place 1. He is the county road foreman for four years, active in First Baptist Church Knights of Pythias and a vice president and captain of the Silsbee Volunteer Fire Department. He asks for votes from Silsbee citizens.
Hardin County filed 12,779 voter registration certificates for the May 2 Democratic Primary by February 27, with 149 voided from 12,928 issued due to multiple registrations found during alphabetizing. Precincts list varied counts. Plank and Wotan had no certificates voided. Auto owners urged to renew by March 31. lost certificates can be replaced with a car title and prior registration.
David Matthews an 18 year old from Silsbee signed a four year basketball scholarship with Phillips University Enid Oklahoma coach Dan Montgomery announced March 4 The 62 inch guard was named to the All District 22 AAA team for the 1969 1970 season in which the Tigers finished second
Silsbee police report four auto accidents within city limits totaling 1425 in damages. The latest occurred at 3 p m Tuesday March 3 when Karen Pearce Bryan 19 of Silsbee stopped at a red light and was hit from the rear by Frank Doyle Farmer 55 also of Silsbee.
Four Silsbee High School seniors from Silsbee named area duchesses for the Neches River Festival to be held April 15 to 19. Duchesses include Sue Adams Ann Leigh Par et Sara Shepherd and Cheryl Bean. They received invitations in January and attended a Beaumont tea honoring the Beaumont princesses. The River Festival Queen will be crowned from the Beaumont princesses.
Johnny Lee Hancock, 20, allegedly took candy and gum at Silshee Supermarket on February 28. He dropped his coat containing $14.50, five pairs of women's panties, batteries and tobacco before being arrested for theft under five dollars. He paid a $37.50 fine but was jailed when unable to pay.
Henry M. Donelson Jr. announced his candidacy for Hardin County Treasurer, filing with County Chairman Herman Adams on Feb 28. A 20-year Silsbee resident, Sam Houston University graduate, WWII veteran, he runs an insurance office with wife Dixie Overstreet, a Silsbee High School science teacher, and their two children.
Elmer L McLaughlin announces candidacy for Place 3 on the Silsbee City Council with an April 7 election to fill three seats He is a Santa Fe roundhouse clerk, a Birmingham native who moved to Texas in 1955 and has lived in Silsbee 15 years He and wife Carolyn have three children and he attends First Baptist Church.
Silsbee Volunteer Firemen reported 44 alarms in February with 29 outside city limits and 15 inside. Fire Chief John Busby noted 31 woods and trash fires, seven house fires, three stove and vent fires, two inspections and one false alarm on February 26. Early March saw a grass fire near Lee Miller Road and Fresenius Road and a car fire at 10 20 p m on March 3.
