Fires Raze Home of F. J. Spikes on West Avenue

Two separate blazes struck the residence of F. J. Spikes at 1460 West Avenue J on Feb. 19 and 23. Fire marshal and Beaumont insurance investigator probe the arson possibility as police note kerosene odor and a missing $293 from under the mattress.

Ferrell seeks re election to Silsbee council Place 3

Silsbee City Councilman Dr N G Ferrell files for re election to Place 3 with an April 7 vote to fill three council seats. Ferrell, a veterinarian and Texas A M University graduate, serves on the library board and belongs to First United Methodist Church and the Lions Club. He and his wife have four children.

Enderle seeks Place 7 on Lumberton School Board

George E Enderle 51 of Lumberton announced his candidacy for Place 7 on the Lumberton School Board of Trustees. He and his wife with two daughters live on Chance Cut-Off Road, attend Lumberton Church of Christ, and he is a Mobil Oil employee with 24 years service. Enderle urged voters to remember him on April 4 and pledged to do what is right to improve education while cutting expenses.

Lumberton II to Organize Tonight at School

Lumberton Little League plans a re organization meeting tonight at Lumberton Elementary School. An election of officers will be held and parents of eligible boys aged eight to 12 are urged to attend. Al Courts serves as president.

Three Silsbee Men Arrested in Regional Narcotics Raid

On Feb 19 a large operation spanning Silsbee Beaumont Port Arthur and Houston led to 31 warrants for 31 suspects. Silsbee officers with Beaumont Jasper County and Jefferson County help arrested Ronnie Capps 24 and John Ferdinal Jr 20 for marijuana and other drugs, while Marcus Neal Roberts 24 was seized in Houston. Bond set at 1000 each. The raid marks the third such action in the area since August 1969.

Seven Youths Charged in Sour Lake Breakins

Seven youths from Lumberton Beaumont Voth and Victor face burglary charges in Hardin County Justice C A Kimball hearing Feb 19 21. One 17 year old and seven 15 16 year olds accused of two breakins at Pinewood Grocery Sour Lake with loot including liquor cash and a cash register.

Accidental drowning ruled in Lumberton woman's death

The Lumberton Justice of the Peace ruled Mrs. Lillie A. Taylor died accidentally after being found in a ditch by her trailer on US 69 US 96. An autopsy was performed at Farmer Funeral Home. The Warren native, 64, had lived in Lumberton nine years and is survived by husband R C Taylor a son Eska C Moore and three sisters.

Silsbee Hears 1969 Auditor Report on City Finances

The Silsbee City Council heard a 1969 audit by John Coville of Koshkin Norfeldt Coville Ferrell and Associates and accepted the report. Income rose about 105000 from 1968 largely due to sales tax. expenditures grew 93500 with big allocations to highways and streets and public safety. The council noted improved accounting. Gibson's Department Stores discussed a Pine Plaza store but required water and sewer studies before construction. City Manager Hickerson was authorized to attend a Texas A&M breakfast for a water and sewer plant operator club.

Tiger Cagers Finish Second In District With 10-2 State

Kirkendall seeks re election to Lumberton Board Place 3

Kenneth R. Kirkendall, longtime Lumberton resident and former vice president of the Board, files to seek a second term as a member of the Lumberton School District Board of Trustees. He cites district growth, space and finance challenges, and aims to continue independent representation for students and taxpayers. He works for Jefferson Chemical Co. and lives with his wife Joyce Brumley and three children, who attend Lumberton schools, near Emanuel Baptist Church.

Career Night at Silsbee High School March 5

In observance of Public School Week Silsbee High School along with the Kiwanis and Key Clubs will host a college and career night on Thursday March 5 from 7 to 9. Schools and agencies including University of Houston Texas A M University Texas Woman's University Prairie View A M College Lamar State College and others will participate. A general assembly in the cafeteria leads to three session visits followed by an informal reception with all teachers. Lumberton Evadale and Kountze have been invited.
