Kirby Lumber workers approve 3-year contract

The International Woodworkers of America Local 5 114 ratified a three year deal with Kirby Lumber Corp by a two to one margin. The agreement provides a package increase of about 66 cents per hour plus fringe benefits, with yearly wage raises of 12, 8, and 10 cents and added holiday benefits. Over 400 employees will benefit from the pact.

Silsbee City Council weighs Fifth Street parking and hydrant fixes

At a July 14 meeting the council debated parking removal on Fifth Street and fire hydrant installations, reflecting earlier June talks on draining Fifth Street traffic with a grade crossing. Santa Fe representative Collins Huchberg warned a new crossing would worsen main line operations and block train movements during peak times. The council noted traffic counts rising from 4 000 to over 15 000 autos daily and stressed railroad cooperation to keep the crossing open during peak hours.

Silsbee Schools Listed Non Compliant by Justice Dept

A likely breakdown in communications between Justice and HEW led to the Silsbee Independent School District being listed as non compliant by the Justice Department in a July 7 release of 48 Texas districts. HEW had earlier ruled SISD compliant after the district agreed to operate Robinson Elementary as an integrated kindergarten starting 1970.

J. W. Robinson Named Manager Plant and Environmental Services

J W Robinson joined Kirby Lumber Corp in the new post of Manager Plant and Environmental Services. He will oversee support services and new construction at the Silsbee mill complex and lead pollution abatement improvements. Robinson is a professional engineer and OU graduate, with further work at the University of Cincinnati. he and his wife Lavena and their two children previously lived in Lake Jackson, Texas.

Trustees Contract For Special Education Funds

Trustees of the Silsbee Independent School District authorized Supt Don L. Hough to enter into contracts with Beaumont special education schools under state legislation. The Beaumont State Center for Human Development, the Beaumont Remedial Clinic, and the Angie Nall School Hospital will be paid through the District and the Texas Education Agency for services to SISD students. The board also accepted a bid from Pritchard and Abbott to appraise oil and gas properties for 3,500 annually for 1970 and 1971, tabled insurance bids for 1970-71, awarded high school parking lot repairs to Irving Caspar at 4 per sq ft, contracted Busby for four school bus repairs at 476 total, granted Sinclair Oil a 1970-71 petroleum contract, and accepted resignations while hiring several new staff.

Car Truck Crash Leaves Minor Injuries In Silsbee

A Monday crash at the US 96 and Highway 327 intersection injured Mary Donalson, 49, of Silsbee, and caused $400 damage to her 1970 Dodge. The collision with a 1969 tractor trailer driven by Sidney Gipson, 42, of Kirbyville, occurred at 12 30 p m. Donalson was treated and released from Silsbee Doctors Hospital and cited for running a red light.

Fire Damages Walters Home in Early Morning Blaze

Fire of undetermined origin caused about 200 dollars in damage to the home of David Lee Walters on July 14. The blaze began around 1 a.m. in the utility room and was reported by Fire Chief John Busby as an ongoing investigation the next day.

Lack To Call Meeting Of Redistricting Panel

Hardin County Commissioners Court discussed scheduling a redistricting committee meeting this week upon request by Frank Carpenter of Sour Lake. Judge Emmett Lack noted more census figures are being gathered to guide possible August district changes, with no date set yet.

Investigation Follows Shooting Of Youth 14

The 14 year old Johnny Eddings was shot in the right side with a small caliber rifle while visiting a neighbor on the Ne Spurger Highway. He was taken to Silsbee Doctors Hospital and then transferred to St Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont where officials described his condition as fair and under close observation. The Hardin County Sheriff's Department and County Attorney Dwayne Overstreet are leading the investigation with further details to follow.

Beaumont Man Charged With Theft Of Wire

A Beaumont man, Leo Manuel Smith, 31, was charged in Lumberton with felony theft for stealing 198 pounds of copper wire from Kirby Lumber Corp. Deputy Sheriff John Smith reported the arraignment before Lumberton Justice of the Peace J. M Bowman with bond set at $1,000 on July 11. Smith posted the bond and was released.

Two Gilmer youths held on ambulance theft charges

Two Gilmer youths aged 15 and 14 were remanded to Upshur County Sheriff's custody on auto theft charges. Deputy Sheriff David Eaton said they were captured in Saratoga at 9:30 a.m. July 8 and were moved to Gilmer by Upshur officers at 7 a.m. July 9.

Beaumont Man Drowns In Canal At Lumberton

Louis B. Leach of 3390 Helena Beaumont was ruled dead in an accidental drowning after his body was recovered from a Lumberton canal near Cook's Lake Road. He went under while swimming with friends at 7 10 p m and was found at 9 05 p m by C M Kasper of the Lumberton Volunteer Fire Department. Units from Silbee and Kountze fire departments were en route when the body was found. Funeral services were held at 3 30 p m Sunday at Carroll Wallace Funeral Home Chapel with Rev Parks E Walker. Burial was in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. He is survived by his wife Gertrude and two sons, James and Louis, both of Beaumont, and a daughter Jo Ann Haggard.
