Suspect In Cherokee County Killing Captured Near Silsbee
Otis Herman Heiselbetz aged 49 surrendered to area peace officers Monday evening after a manhunt around Silsbee. He was sought on murder charges for the January 14 slaying of Alto logger June H. Rodgers. Officers found a rifle and held Heiselbetz at the Hardin County Jail awaiting transfer.

Two Theft Suspects Jailed In Anahuac
Two Lamberton youths, Johnny Millner aged 17 and a 15 year old minor, were jailed in Anahuac on burglary and felony theft charges tied to the Jands Burglary of a Western Auto Store in Winnie. They face additional counts in Hardin County for other local burglaries and auto theft.

Fire marshals and an insurance agent opened an investigation on January 20 into the fire that destroyed the Waldo Mathews school on January 9. Silsbee Fire Chief John Busby said investigators identified as Fire Marshal W Alvin Schmit Deputy Fire Marshal Virgil Miller and Troy Standley of the American Insurance Association. Arson was suspected as the fire spread rapidly and blue flames were observed in certain areas.

Bridge Fire Near Silsbee Linked to Freezing Weather
Silsbee volunteers fought a bridge fire on US 96 three miles south of Silsbee at 4:30 p m Sunday January 18. Firemen extinguished the blaze in about thirty minutes removing burned insulation as winds reportedly tipped a smudge pot. Two trucks were present but one sufficed.

Eight Indicted and No Bills in Hardin County Grand Jury
Hardin County Grand Jury met Monday January 19 indicting eight individuals including five burglary to commit theft charges against Alton Edwards James Williams Jr Theodore Follie Jerry Young both of Silsbee and David Parrish of Saratoga. Other indictments included Gerald Wayne Glenn for driving while intoxicated D C Elam for forgery and passing a forged instrument and Jimmy Dennis for injuring personal property. Eleven were no billed including Kountze youths Jack Davis Mitchell Ray Gore Johnny Gore and Vernon Spikes with rape accusations in Silsbee and Rex Moore as the justice of the peace.

Stabbing Case Under Investigation Near Torch Club
Battise Battise, 25, of the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation near Woodville, was hospitalized in Beaumont after a stabbing at 8 20 p m Sunday at the Torch Club near the Hardin Polk county line. Hardin County Sheriff Tom Easley said investigators were pursuing leads as of noon Wednesday. He was moved from Hardin Memorial Hospital to St Elizabeth Hospital by Pace Ambulance Sunday night.
