Easley Announces Run for Hardin County Sheriff in 1970

Sheriff Tom Easley of Kountze says he will seek election to a full term as Hardin County Sheriff in the upcoming May Democratic primary. Easley noted his appointment last year and a 38 year career as a landman with major companies.

Burglars Hit Morris Pharmacy In Pins Plaza Center

Burglars cut through three businesses to loot Morris Pharmacy during the night of January 13. They stole narcotics including morphine and amphetamines, plus safes, cameras, watches, and small items. A note left behind referenced nerves from the heist. Police and Crime Lab assist in the investigation with Texas Ranger L. C. White.

Thieves Steal 14 Tapes and .22 Rifle From Car

John Wilson of Silsbee reported a burglary in which 14 stereo tapes, a new tape case, and a .22 caliber Remington rifle were taken from his parked car in the library parking lot between 8 p.m. and midnight on Saturday January 10. The crime was reported to Silsbee Police on Tuesday.

Hardin County to consider 2 million road bond election

Hardin County Commissioners will convene Friday at 10 a m to call a two million dollar road bond election. Petitions with signatures from the Silsbee area have been submitted for certification as part of county wide roadway improvement plans over a 10 year span. The court plans to set the election date within 21 to 30 days after January 16.

Mrs. Eve Havens of 595 Park Street Silsbee announced her candidacy for Justice of the Peace Precinct 5. In other business the county debated a $12000 Southwestern Bell bill for relocating lines and cables tied to US 96 Silsbee bypass with road damages claimed by Commissioners Barrington and Burch.

Loot From 9 Burglaries Recovered and 2 Arrested

Nine camp house burglaries in Hardin County tie to the Lumberton School theft on Dec 29 and Road Runner Food Store burglary on Jan 7. Sheriff Tom Easley reports two juveniles arrested and five questioned as goods are recovered from seven camps. Further warrants are pending and more loot was found in a Beaumont apartment and an abandoned pickup.

HEW Rules Robinson School Violates Civil Rights Act

HEW hearing examiner Stan ley J. Jacobo ruled that Silsbee Independent School District’s Frank Robinson Elementary violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The decision, the first HEW action since the Oct 15 1969 hearing, threatens to rescind Title I II and III funds if Robinson remains non compliant. Investigation Pending In Waldo Mathews Fire

State probe continues into the Waldo Mathews school fire on Jan 9. Fire Chief Busby notes arson indicators and lack of contact from Austin authorities while Silsbee volunteers, aided by Kountze and Lamberton units, fought the blaze that destroyed the former all Negro school insured for 25000 dollars.

Stevens Promoted to Manufacturing Manager at Kirby Lumber

B. Stevens of Silsbee is named manager of manufacturing for Kirby Lumber Corp effective January 1. He will oversee lumber and plywood operations along with the power plant shop and Silsbee office administration. Previously he managed plywood operations since 1968 and served in WW II.

Rocky Kelley Dragged By Spooked Horse

Surgeons fought to save the worn severed right foot of Robert Rocky Kelley after a horse spooked and dragged him into a tree near his High Way 418 home west of Silsbee Saturday at 1 15 pm He was rushed to St Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont where doctors re attached the foot and hoped for a full recovery

Photographer attacked during Big Thicket pilot trip

Professional photographer Jim Seymour of Austin, chosen by the Texas State Historical Association, was allegedly pushed into scrap lumber and had his $1500 camera and film damaged while filming near Honey Island on a Saturday. He was with James Vowell when the incident occurred at a small sawmill. The mill owner and Seymour argued after an approach to his car, tape recordings allegedly captured the exchange, and local officials said the matter was not taken seriously. Seymour offered to drop the case if compensation paid, but he later reconsidered after consulting his attorney and the TSHA.

Lumberton voters consider $889000 school bond issue

Lumberton residents vote February 7 at the elementary school cafeteria on an $889,000 bond plan to build a junior high south of the high school and facilities. Three propositions fund a 450 seat junior high for grades six to eight, a technical–vocational building, and a band hall with athletic field house.

City Council forms five member Silsbee Fire Commission

Silsbee City Council approved a resolution to create a five member Fire Commission with two private citizens, one member from the City Council, one from the Volunteer Fire Department, and one appointed by the Commission. Jim Hays was named to the Commission with E M Simmons Cecil Smyley reappointed, and Osiin Davis added by the Volunteer Fire Department. The council also borrowed 17000 to finish paying for a lot adjacent to City Hall, approved library funding of 3470, budget maps worth 10600, and granted Rev. Thomas Harris a second temporary taxi permit pending a service investigation.
