Lumberton Set to Vote on 889000 School Bond Propositions

A referendum on Saturday February 7 will decide an $889 000 three part bond issue for Lumberton Independent School District. The election will be held in the Lumberton Elementary School Cafeteria with Proposition One proposing $557 000 for construction.

Wind Fanned Fires Hit Silsbee Area and Nearby Farms

Trash burning and winds over 30 mph sparked two major fires and three smaller grass blazes near Silsbee over three days. The largest, Jan 29, burned 150 acres from a trash fire north of FM 1122 to the Double R Ranch and across the highway. Fire units from Silsbee, Kountze, and the Texas Forest Service aided by plows and volunteers fought until about 5 p.m. Additional calls followed to grass and trash fires on Watts Road and near FM 92, drawing multiple crews and local residents before containment.

Pattillo Announces Candidacy for Hardin County Clerk

Lafayette Pattillo of Honey Island declares his bid for Hardin County Clerk. A W. L. Brackin descendant, Pattillo grew up near West Nona and now works in income tax. He and wife L. A. Pattillo have two children teaching in Seguin and are active in First Baptist Kountze.

Three Wrecks Reported by Area DPS Officers

Highway Patrolman Truman Dougharty reported three wrecks at week’s end. On Jan 28 Billy Ray Dykes 22 of Longview ran off US 69 south of Kountze and hit Cypress Creek bridge. his 1969 Chevrolet was damaged. On Jan 29 Robert Lee Flowers 18 of Kountze suffered a broken arm when his 1965 Ford hit a flight pole at the Kountze Silsbee Y. he was treated and later admitted to Baptist Hospital Beaumont with fair condition. A two car collision east of Silsbee on Highway 327 damaged two vehicles and injured a Beaumont man. Benjamin Strawn of Port Arthur sideswiped James Arnold of ___. total damage $800.

Ten thousand plus register to vote in Hardin County

Approximately 12 000 residents in Hardin County have registered to vote this year according to County Tax Assessor-Collector Fred Anders. He notes the process is lengthy as the list must be typed sorted into precincts and alphabetized for certification and distribution.

Headon Crash Kills 2 at Evadale Lakeview Road collision

A head on crash two miles east of Evadale on Lakeview Road killed Randy Tucker 6 and Alvin Ray Tucker 16 and injured three others, including Donnie Jones 16 who was listed in fair condition. Victims Randy and Alvin Ray Tucker died at the scene and at St Elizabeth hospital in Beaumont.

FBI arrests three Lansing men in Lumberton kidnapping case

Three Lansing men were arrested by FBI agents in Lumberton on charges of kidnapping and transporting a stolen automobile across state lines. Suspects William Everett Friedlieb 18 Barry Stuberry 21 and David William Colosky 18 were taken into custody by Beaumont agents.

Two Auto Accessory Thefts Reported To Silsbee Police

Silsbee police logged two auto accessory thefts from late January to early February. Kirk Droddy reported items including an 8-track player and 17 cassettes stolen from a Silsbee High School parked auto. J D Haynes reported a whitewall tire valued at 35 dollars stolen from a 1969 Ford pickup. Both cases were under investigation.

Hit Run Driver Fined Sixty Dollars in Silsbee

Beaumont man Paul Herrison, 51, was fined 60 dollars in Silsbee Justice of the Peace Rex Moore's court on Jan. 29 for leaving the scene and for failure to yield. The incident occurred Jan. 25 on US 96 and Mitchell Road near Beaumont.

E Simmons of Silsbee filed for Hardin County sheriff on Monday announcing his candidacy. A 52 year old Orange County native, he has lived in Silsbee 19 years, is a World War II veteran, Baptist, homeowner, and father of seven. He works 26 years as a process operator for Neches Butane at Port Neches and vows respectful, orderly, and businesslike conduct.
