Miss Sharnon Hawthorne Named Miss Silsbee 1970

Sharnon Louise Hawthorne, 20, daughter of Mr and Mrs Don Hawthorne, was chosen Miss Silsbee 1970 at the 12th annual pageant held February 7 at Silsbee Junior High School. First runner up was Rita Nowlin and second runner up Carol David. Hawthorne sang Ive Got To Be Me for talent. Nowlin did a dance titled The Good The Bad and The Ugly. David sang On a Clear Day. The event was sponsored by the Businesswomen's Association.

Burglaries Reported In Silsbee On Feb 4 And 8

Police logged two break ins in Silsbee. Leon Herrington said thieves entered Leon's Hobby Shop through the back on Feb 4 about 2 PM during a funeral, stealing 20 dollars from the cash register and leaving a plastic model. David Marshall reported Frank Robinson Elementary School entry through a cafeteria window on Feb 8 with several windows and one room found open but no noted loss.

Three Seats to Be Filled in Silsbee City Council Election

The Silsbee City Council set April 7 as the election date to fill three council seats. Incumbents John Fordinal Place 1 James L Hays Place 2 and Dr N G Ferrell Place 4 hold terms. filing closes March 6 at 5 p m. Election judge Ernie Dietrich will oversee voting at the Silsbee Fire Hall from 8 a m to 7 p m.

Lumberton Bond Issues Defeated in School Vote

A three proposition $889000 Lumberton Independent School District bond plan failed 1970 to 934. Proposition 1 for a 577000 junior high received 397 to 585, Proposition 2 for a 165000 tech building 281 to 684, and Proposition 3 for a band hall and fieldhouse 256 to 701. Total votes 982. Supt. Eichmann said crowding forces may lead to split sessions next fall.

Neyland Declines Re election to Silsbee School Board

Robert A. Neyland, member of the Silsbee Independent School District Board of Trustees Place 5 and president of Hardin County Savings and Loan Association, announced he will not seek another term. He urged capable contenders to enter the race and cited need to focus on other matters, praising Supt Don L. Hough and the board.

March 7 Election Set For $2 Million Road Bond Issue

Hardin County commissioners unanimously set Saturday March 7 as the date for a $2 million road bond election to fund a 10 year county road program. If approved at 2/3, bonds would finance right of way purchases. tax impact could be 50 cents per $100 valuation for the full 20 year plan.

Appeals Judge Rules Gates On Tyler County Roads Legal

Justice Quentin Keith of the Ninth Court of Civil Appeals voided a Tyler County jury verdict that Joe's Lake Road and Bush Lake Road be opened to the public. The decision said no action showed the county had made roads public and noted maintenance may have occurred without court approval. Similar suits are pending in Hardin County.

World War I Vets To Meet Saturday

Barracks 2641 Veterans of World War I and Auxiliary will hold a 2 30 p m meeting Saturday at Neches National Bank. Arthur G Lundine District Commander plans to meet with the Veterans and District Auxiliary president Mrs Irie will meet with the women. John J Richardson leads the local group.

Rash Files For Lumberton School Trustee Seat Place 5

A. L. Rash, World War I veteran and longtime Lumberton resident, filed to run for Place 5 on the Lumberton Board of Trustees. He has lived in Lumberton 12 years, worked for Bell Telephone Co. about 19 years, and is active at St. Luke's Methodist Church. Nine hopes to meet voters on election day April 4.

Knifing Suspect Fined for Damaging Cell and More

Johnnie Glenn Smith, 24, of Silsbee and Houston, held on $5000 bond in Hardin County on assault with intent to murder charges after allegedly knifing Pat Means in a Spurger area incident on Feb 7. Smith was jailed in Kountze and fined $220 for destroying county property by tearing up padding in a padded cell.

Trustees Discuss Silsbee School Calendar and Special Education

The Silsbee Independent School District board met to review amendments to the 1969 70 calendar to cover three lost flu days and consider an extended 1970 71 year to meet the 190 day teacher and 180 day student requirements. Also on the agenda were a 70 71 special education program, state funded kindergarten for deprived children, bus purchases, and substitute teachers Shirley Gilchriest and Susan Bollich.

Traffic signal for FM 418 and FM 92 may be installed by April

District Engineer Franklin D. Young says material delivery unlocks the project and all items should be in hand by March 4 1970. Silsbee previously agreed to pay $2000 for state installation after a June 1969 pact. The four way intersection has seen many accidents per City Manager Ronald Hickerson.

Kountze Youth Dies In Auto Truck Crash

Kenneth Glenn Smart 19 of Kountze died at the scene when his car veered on a curve and hit a sand dump truck on FM 1 five miles west of US 69 at about 1 30 pm Thursday February 5. Truck driver Pete Sharpe of Lumberton was slightly injured.
