Hardin County Redistricting Approves One Man One Vote Plan

Hardin County Commissioners Court adopts the Supreme Court one man one vote doctrine in a redistricting plan effective January 1 1971. Precincts are realigned with Silsbee and Kountze areas split and new commissioners named, while objections from Tom Burch Virgil Caraway and critics are aired during the vote.

Raid Nets Ten Local Men In Tin Top Gambling Bust

A Silsbee area sheriffs raid on the Tin Top club on Fresenius Road netted ten local men Saturday morning on gambling charges. L. J. Young and Preston Moore were charged with permitting habitual gambling, eight others fined $60 by Judge Rex Moore. several others named with addresses. The raid followed surveillance since July 4 and reports of crooked dice, cutting, and theft in games of chance. Sheriff Tom Easley and Deputies Smith and Eaton conducted the operation.

SISD Atlantic tax hearing set for 9 a.m. today

A SISD hearing on Atlantic-Richfield Oil Co. 1970 tax assessments is scheduled for 9 a.m. today in the School Tax Office on West 1 Avenue H. Atlantic plans to object to the 100 percent production assessment of 12,815,640. the company has paid 9,319,360 this year due to reduced plant production. A prior board of equalization session was held Tuesday at the Hardin County Courthouse in Kountze. no county figures were available at press time.

Silsbee QB Club Plans First Fall Meeting

The Silsbee Quarterback Club will hold its first 1970 season meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday Sept. 1 in the Neches National Bank. Stolen Pay Phone 23 Tapes and Suitcase Connected in Silsbee

Silsbee police investigated two thefts reported Monday. A wall mounted pay phone was stolen from a washateria after the Aug 23–24 break in. In a separate incident 23 stereo tapes and a suitcase were taken from a car on South 10th Street.

Kountze Man Charged In Beaumont Robbery

Wilson Jack Frouge Jr., 34, of Kountze, is held in Jefferson County Jail on 3500 bond after being charged with the Tuesday hold up of K and R Variety Store in Beaumont. Detective Captain Corder said the owner Juliette Rosinger was held at knife point and about $40 was taken. Frouge reportedly slashed his wrists after arrest but injuries were not serious.

Silsbee Schools Open Doors on Aug. 31

Summer ends for Silsbee students as grades 1 through 12 resume classes for the Fall 1970 semester on Monday Aug. 31. Junior high and high school students will pick up fall schedules from 8 a.m. to noon on Thursday Aug. 27. New students may register through Friday at their assigned schools. 1970 grade assignments place 1-2 at Kirby Elementary, 3-4 at Read Turrentine, 5-6 at O’Neil Intermediate, and kindergarten at Robinson School.

Silsbee Country Club Hosts Member-Guest Golf Tourney

Silsbee County Club will hold a 36 hole two day Member-Guest golf tournament on Aug 29 and 30 off FM 418 west of Silsbee. Play is in medal and best ball formats with an 18 handicap cap. Prizes include merchandise certificates for low gross and low net teams, and multiple low net runners-up. Buffet dinner and dance for members and guests at 7 p.m. Saturday.
