Charles Jones Drowns In Neches River Friday

Charles Edward Jones, 47, drowned Friday while swimming in the Neches River near Brushy Bluff. His funeral was held Sunday at the Farmer Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. J A Hendrix officiating. Burial followed in Resthaven Cemetery. Jones is survived by three sons, two daughters, his parents, a sister, and three grandchildren.

Pair Charged With $1,500 Tool Theft

Two men Cecil C. Gieger and Merle Capron were arrested in Kountze after about $1,500 worth of mechanic tools were found in their car. They face burglary charges in Lumberton Justice of the Peace court and are held on $1,000 bonds in Hardin County jail.

No Area Draft Call For August Six For Physicals

There will be no area draft call for August 1970, Texas Local Board 86 announced this week. Only six local men have been ordered to report for armed forces physicals on August 6: Steven Gary Madeley of Silsbee, Larry Raymond Keen and Jimmy Wayne Ray of Liberty, John Thomas Wheeler of Cleveland, Kenneth Wayne Cotten of Mont Belvieu, and Dexter James Viator of Winnie.

Carl Gibbs 86 Dies in Beaumont

Carl Gibbs 86 of 4195 Milam died Tuesday afternoon at Schlesinger Geriatric Center in Beaumont. A retired railway expressman, he had previously lived in Silsbee. Survived by wife Mae Gibbs of Beaumont and son Col. Asa B. Gibbs of Satellite Beach Florida.

City Police Nab 13 Juvenile Offenders In July

Silsbee Police arrested 13 juveniles in July, ages 12 to 16, for various offenses. Police Chief Edgar Blood called the month an unprecedented rise. Offense reports show shoplifting, malicious mischief, auto theft, alcohol possession, traffic violations, and city ordinance violations.

A Silsbee citizens group advocating Hardin County redistricting meets at 5 p.m. today in the Hardin County Savings & Loan clubroom. Attys Earl B. Lumberton School Opens August 17 with Assigned Registration

Lumberton Schools plan classes to start August 17 and bus service will run on schedule. Superintendent Nelson Eichman announced registration for high school on August 12 in the cafeteria with grade specific times and an eighth grade registration on August 13 from 8 to 10 a.m. Seventh graders report to the experimental building on August 17.

Summer Reading Program Deadline Set at Silsbee Library

Silsbee Public Library urges 200 students through eighth grade to finish reading lists and return them by Monday August 31 to qualify for Texas Library Board certificates. Individual certificates available after September 1. July 1970 circulation rose to 4411, beating June 1969 records.

Two Year Old in Serious Condition After Auto Crash

A two year old boy, Robert Dennis Edgar, is in serious condition after a single vehicle crash near Village Mills on US 69 in heavy rain. His mother Margie Edgar, 21, sustained facial lacerations. the child has a compressed skull fracture and scalp lacerations and remains under close observation at St. Elizabeth Hospital. The accident occurred at 3 45 p m Tuesday when their 1967 Chevrolet left the road and overturned into a ditch.

Redistricting Panel Stumbles On 1000-Count Error

A 1000 person counting error in Silsbee disrupted a county redistricting meeting of the Commissioners Court committee on July 30. The error forced a restart of population shuffling and a preliminary plan for two Silsbee precincts emerged, with lines along FM 92 and US 96 and boundaries to the county lines. The plan depends on population, faces local opposition, and a Aug 6 meeting will address the complex issues, while a federal suit over redistricting proceeds with a pre-trial set for Aug 27.

Low Bid Emerges for Silsbee Post Office Contract

John Jennings Industries of Houston was the low bidder among seven for the Silsbee Post Office project. The 10,080 square foot facility will offer more than double the current space, with construction at 13 months and rent set at 3.11 per square foot annually. The final award, to be made by real estate officer W. M. McMillan Jr., is anticipated this month in Dallas and Silsbee.

Sillsbee youth charged with misdemeanor theft

Leonard W. Kyle, 18, of Sillsbee, faces a misdemeanor theft charge for allegedly taking a portable radio valued at 27 dollars from Alfords Furniture and Hardware Store about 9:48 a.m. on July 31. Police arrested him. Justice Rex Moore set bond at 1000 dollars. He posted bond and was released on Wednesday.

Final Rites For Gayle Tarver Held In Silsbee

Funeral services for Gayle Tarver 84 of Silsbee were conducted at 4 p.m. in the Farmer Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Elmo Withers officiating. Burial followed at Rest Haven Cemetery. Tarver, a Polk County native and longtime Silsbee resident, was a retired farmer and local cattleman who owned Tarver Grocery Store. He died Sunday evening in St Elizabeth Hospital Beaumont after a brief illness. Surviving are his wife Ina Tarver one son Sherwood Tarver of Port Arthur six daughters Lucille Mancil Houston Audrie Black Buna Ola Mae Tantillo Ruth Hawley Zona Gail Taylor Beaumont Lettie Brown Rockport Tex one sister Evie Richardson Kountze five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A public opening occurred on Wednesday August 5 in Silsbee for the Massey Lake Nature Trail three miles southeast of town.
