Six Thefts Investigated By City County Officers

Six burglary reports were logged this week with the Hardin County Sheriff's office and the Silsbee Police. Loot included nearly $1,000 from Lumberton Elementary School Tax Office after a door was pried open and the safe cracked with sharp tools. Four Batson youths faced charges after draining gasoline from buses at West Hardin School.

New SISD Board Officers Named

James E. Farmer was elected president of the Silsbee Independent School District board at an April 8 meeting. W. J. Poshataske as vice president and Earl Stover as secretary were also named. New members C. R. Baker and D. D. Shine joined, with Farmer reaffirmed at Place 4.

Kindergarten and First Grade Registration Set for April 28

Registration for kindergarten and first grade will be held in the junior high gym on April 28 from 8 30 a m to 2 30 p m. Children must be five or six by Sept 1 1970 respectively. Title I and state supported kindergarten units will operate on Robinson campus with vaccines and birth certificates encouraged.

Second Miss Silsbee Pageant At Robinson School

The Exquised and Royal Clover Leaf Clubs sponsor the Miss Silsbee Pageant at Frank Robinson Elementary School on Friday April 17 at 7 30 p m. Contestants Georgia Campbel Deborah K Johnson Tommie Jean Mathews Elaine Turk perform in talent swim suits evening dresses and a question period. The winner advances to Miss Mary Alpine District in Silsbee on April 24 with Orange Beaumont and Port Arthur. Entertainment includes The Morning After music group.

Hawthornes Learn Son to Be Discharged Tuesday

Mr and Mrs Don Lee Haw thorne received word from their son Don G Haw thorne who has been stationed at Camp LeJeune Calif with the Marine Corps would be discharged Tuesday.

Union OKS New Evans Contract

Evans Products Co. of Silsbee and Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union Local 4-592 ratified a new two year contract on April 9. The agreement raises wages 18 cents now and 15 cents in 1971, with many employees gaining 8 to 63 cents hourly. A new shift schedule adds seven cents for the 3 11 p m shift and 10 cents for the 11 p m 7 a m shift. Seniority protections improve and jurors receive full pay. About 100 employees are affected.

County Cars Barred From Hauling Voters In Texas Case

A district judge granted a temporary injunction in Hardin County restraining Sheriff Easley and deputies from transporting voters to absentee polls in Kountze. The suit by Herman Holland alleges deputies used county vehicles to ferry voters and organize absentee voting, with a hearing set for April 20.

Silsbee Council Eases Firemen Utility Exemption Rules

The Silsbee City Council approved a change allowing firemen who attend 50 percent of drills and 25 percent of calls to have their city utilities paid. The measure replaces a 50/50 monthly standard deemed inequitable. The council also set plans to refund any erroneous billing and discussed maps, traffic-light maintenance, and several city purchases and appointments.

Hardin County redistricting committee appointed

Hardin County Commissioners appointed five members to a redistricting committee at an April 6 meeting. The panel includes Frank McClanahan Cyril Thorn Frank Carpenter Don J L Harrison and Mrs Stella Prices Village Malls. The committee will present findings June 2 with action planned at the first August meeting.

Youth Council Seeks Library Funds in Downtown Drive

Silsbee Youth Council will collect donations for the new library at multiple downtown locations including the post office traffic signals Silsbee State Bank and Pine Plaza entrances. The drive runs 9 am to 5 pm on Saturday April 18 and Saturday April 25 with a goal of dimes and dollars for support. Officers listed are Ellen Buchnan president Charles Landsball vice president and Patty Schnaithman recording secretary.

Two Woods Fires Reported In Week

Silsbee volunteers fought two woods fires during the week. On April 8 a blaze four miles east of Silsbee on US 96 required four trucks and 11 men to control. A second fire eight miles north of Silsbee on the old Spurger highway was tackled by two trucks at 9 45 a m on April 9. Fire Chief John Busby reported the incidents on April 15.

Six Wrecks Reported in Three Days by Police

Police report six traffic wrecks over three days in the city. On Saturday 6:11 p.m. a 1964 Ford driven by Deoise Dixon, 18, struck a 1965 Ford driven by Cynthia Williams Ard, 17, injuring the left side of the Ard car. Dixon cited for failure to yield. Later that afternoon Fate Ard, 61, driving a 1966 Comet, was damaged when hit by Craddie Phillips, 41, who was cited for failure to yield. Earlier at 2:15 p.m. Lamar Y Barbo investigated a rear collision at North Fifth and Avenue 6 between a 1968 Mercury driven by Susan Stanard, 18, and a 1965 Oldsmobile driven by Ronnie Brashier, 20. Brashier cited for following too closely. Damage totaled about 600 to the two cars.

Lumberton High Girls Volleyball Eyes Regional Title

Lumberton High School girls volleyball advances to the regional championship in San Marcos after claiming their second straight bi-district title over Somerville with 15-8 and 15-11 wins. The team roster includes Jeri dams, Beverly Frayter, Connie Moses, Cindy Hargraves, Connig Wych, Beck Baggett, Linda Lawrence, Debbie Parker, Marylyn Sturrock, Sheelan Budke, and Karen Larkin. Coach Cynthia Carmichael leads the Raider squad.
