Garden Club Installs Mrs J D Moore As New President

Silsbée Garden Club held its final meeting of the season at Mrs C E Richmond home with Twenty members. Mrs J D Moore was installed as president and presented a gift to outgoing president Mrs Richmond. A plant sale followed the meeting.

Two Plead Guilty To DWI Counts In County Court

Mack Williams Jr. on April 3 and J. R. Jordan on April 7 pleaded guilty in county court to driving while intoxicated. Each was fined $50 and costs and sentenced to three days in jail. County records show 15 arrests that week by county officers, including one from Odessa on hot check charges and several assaults and multiple drunks.

Rectory Blessing For St. John's Church In Woodlea Sunday

The St. John's Episcopal Church rectory at 107 Bowers Road Woodlea Addition will be blessed Sunday April 13 at four o'clock with Rev. John E. Hines officiating. An open house and tours follow from 4 to 6 o'clock with refreshments by the Women's Auxiliary. Carter Work of Kountze built the modern 3 bedroom 2 bath air conditioned home costing about 18300 dollars on five acres at 2215 Roosevelt Drive Extension. Blind Bogey Meet Set For Week End At Country Club

Silsbee Golf and Country Club announces a blind bogey 18 hole handicap tournament for members on April 12 and 13. Women and men may play 18 holes over one or split across both days with all entry fees used for prizes. A second San Jacinto Day weekend event is planned.

Evadale School and Paper Mill Reach Tax Settlement

Evadale Independent School District and East Texas Pulp and Paper Company agreed to settle their tax dispute out of court. The mill’s valuation is set at 5.5 million with $82,000 due immediately. approval by Judge Joe Fisher was pending. The agreement averts a possible May 1 school shutdown and reduces the district’s tax bill from 119,000 to 82,000 with a 37,000 shortfall.

Five Thousand Dollar Fire Damages Mrs Thompson Residence

Fire at a two story apartment block across from the fire station caused about $5000 in damage to Mrs Sarah Thompson's home. Fire alarm rang at 1230 Saturday as Fire Chief John Busby noted insurance covered losses and March saw 15 calls for various blazes. Donations totaling $27 from local residents were acknowledged.

Congressman Brooks Visits Here Saturday

U.S. Representative Jack Brooks visited Silsbee on Saturday morning stopping at The Silsbee Bee to chat with local friends. He discussed the business recession and Silsbee’s proposed new post office building and noted many factors affect timing but expected some contract action within a year.

Second Work Day Scheduled At Silsbee Little League Park

Silsbee Little League met in Hardin County Savings and Loan office with Jimmy Stoeppleman presiding. A second work day was planned for Saturday at 8 a.m. and Sunday afternoon. Opening day is May 3 with a parade and the first game that night at the park. Next officers meeting is April 29 at 7 30 p.m.

Two Susbee High Key Club plans to attend the ninth annual Texas Oklahoma District Convention in Houston April 18 to 20 at the Rice Hotel. Mass arrest over drag racing on highway 105 near Sour Lake

Hardin county sheriff and Texas highway patrol rounded up 55 Beaumont youths after a late night drag race on highway 105 between Sour Lake and the Batson cutoff. All had prior traffic violations. no charges were filed, and the group was released after a stern warning. Deputy Sheriff E B Coleman had dispersed a smaller prior mob two weeks earlier. County Attorney Earl Stover supervised follow up with about 20 youths in his office.

Santa Fe Moves To Hasten Park Donation

Santa Fe Railway pledges to donate park land to the city of Silsbee. Mayor H M Jones received a letter from L M Olson stating the city must surrender tenancy at will on streets around the park before the donation can proceed. City Council approved the necessary ordinance in special session and sent a copy to Olson's office.

Methodists Schedule Fellowship Supper and Play

A two act biblical play from the book of Mark will be shown at Cravens hall First Methodist church during the fellowship supper Friday night April 25 at 7 o clock. Mrs Ed Brown directs the play. The supper was postponed from April 18 due to a conflict, said general chairman W S Bartle.

Chamber of Commerce hires Beaumont consultant Thursday night

Silsbee chamber of commerce directors met Thursday night at the chamber office to announce yearbook committee appointments and hire Luke Trahan of Beaumont as consultant for 150. Approval followed debate with two no votes from Rob ert Neyland and Frank McClanahan. Hop kins said Trahan not yet at work and further study planned. Membership dues remain 30 for businesses and 12 for individuals. Frank McClanahan to supervise the membership cleanup drive. Eight directors and five committee members attended, with Martin Wilson presiding as newly elected president.
