School Board Ends Segregation in Charleston High Sparks Protests
In Charleston Missouri a citizen group formed to oppose the school board order ending segregation for juniors and seniors at the high school. Fifty white students out of 475 attend, while 27 Negro students enrolled during registration. The Lincoln school will continue, offering Negro juniors and seniors a choice. A 125-person meeting urged rescinding the order, which the board voted 5 to 1 to end. Incident of vandalism followed a board decision.

J Edwin Elledge, 22, of Dexter and a dispatcher at Malden air field, died after his car rear ended a truck on Highway 25 four miles south of here. Passenger James Walker of Bloomfield had a broken arm. Elledge died at a Poplar Bluff hospital after being born January 17 1933 in Lutesville and graduating Essex High School in 1951. He is survived by his parents a brother and two grandmothers. Body at Strickland Raines Funeral Home services at General Baptist Church Thursday at 2 led by Rev Arvin Kinslow.
