Births by race shift in Southeast Missouri counties

Missouri health figures show white births in eight Southeast Missouri counties fell by 79 from 1953 to 1954 while non white births rose by 42. Four counties increased white births and four declined. overall non whites increased and illegitimacy rates among both groups are discussed amid welfare fund concerns.

Mississippi County Farm Bureau backs flexible price supports

In Charleston last week Mississippi County Farm Bureau members reversed their two year stance on price supports for five basic crops, endorsing flexible price supports without cross compliance. They also approved resolutions promoting acreage allotment changes, right to work, rural medical outreach, and other farm policy measures in line with Missouri and national farm groups.

Baptist groups visit county jail in Portageville

Fourteen members of the WM and two RA boys from First Baptist Church visited Benton Jail on Tuesday. They held services for inmates, with Jada Weston delivering the devotional. Magazines and conkles were donated to five prisoners as part of August community mission efforts.

Sikeston six district schools will begin the fall term on Sept 6 1955 with enrollments expected to exceed 3000. High school totals include 725 pupils from spring moves and 2400 expected in elementary. Two Year Old Boy Shot On Porch With Unloaded Rifle

A two year old boy, Michael Wayne Boshell, was shot in the back of the head on his Linn Street porch by a nine year old girl, Jeanette Harton, after a rifle 22 caliber was reportedly shown by the victim’s brother. The gun fired while the child sat on the porch. he was taken to Missouri Delta Community Hospital and then transferred to St Joseph Hospital in Kirkwood for surgery.

Longtime Railway Express worker Henry Layton retires

Henry F. Layton retires after 42 years with the Railway Express lineage from United States Express through Wells Fargo and American Railway Express to Railway Express Agency. He started May 1, 1913 in Cape Girardeau, married Irene Teichman in 1915, and lives at 314 Franklin with seven children and 13 grandchildren. He plans future steps as Sikestonians bid farewell to the express office veteran.

Silver Dollar Day promotes Jaycee Rodeo publicity

The Jaycees will distribute 5000 silver dollars next Saturday to boost interest in the third annual Jaycee Boothed Rodeo starting a week from Friday. Merchants will use the coins as change. Last year’s Silver Dollar Day created notable local buzz as western shoppers preferred hard money. In Dexter, the Jaycee meeting announced a trophy for the open barrel race at the first annual combined horse show. The show, put on by the Dexter Riding and Roping Club, opens at 8 pm in the club arena.

Three Couples Celebrate Thirteenth Anniversary

A Monday gathering on August 15 marked the thirteenth wedding anniversaries of three couples, Mr and Mrs Edgar Bird, Mr and Mrs Herman Paullus, and Mr and Mrs Alfred Culbertson. Attendees included the children of the couples. refreshments were ice cream cake and soft drinks at the Paullus home in the afternoon.

It's a Small World Outside the United States meet in Salonica

Two young men from the same MinER dairy farm area, Pfe and Parker Rowe, met unexpectedly in Salonica Greece during shore leave. Dye from Miner, son of Mr and Mrs David Dye, served on the aircraft carrier Intrepid, while Rowe, son of Mr and Mrs Burt Rowe of Sikes ton, had operated the farm nearby. Both are part of a US effort in Greece aiding agricultural rehabilitation.

Plan Livestock Meeting In New Morid Aug 30

A dinner meeting of the County Livestock Producers will be held in New Madrid at the Clane Ho tel Coffee Shop Tuesday evening. Joe Hau bold, chairman, says the gathering will discuss fall and winter livestock issues, hogs and cattle. Smoky Woods, livestock marketing director, Missouri Farm Bureau Federation, will be principal speaker. All New Madrid County producers are invited.

Community Chest budget set at 35300 for nine agencies

The 1955 Community Chest directors tentatively approved a 35300 budget including nine agencies.
