General MacArthur announced that Japan’s demobilization is complete with about 7,000,000 men affected. Other items include embezzlement arrests in St. Louis, Tokyo police reforms ending torture, mass army releases, Navy politics, a Missouri dog attack, a student flying to college daily, and postwar population estimates for Japanese cities.
Missouri State Highway Department reports a Sikeston traffic study showing Highway 60 near the Cotton Oil Mill carries about 3500 vehicles per day with a 20 percent Saturday increase, while Highway 61 at the North Y averages 2500 vehicles daily. The survey includes motorists interviews and counts, notes 300 cars per hour peak on 60, and urges further data during harvest season to guide city traffic solutions.
H. G. Sharp of Sikeston and his son Garwood and H. G. Sharp ITI attended a Memphis preview for the 1946 Chevrolet at the zone headquarters. A public showing is set for Saturday November 3 with dealers nationwide displaying the new model. Sharp predicted high sales to meet pent up demand though initial supply will be limited as production permits rise.
A local ginnery reports only 220 bales ginned to date amid widespread delays and late season conditions. One ginner recalls a 1700 bale figure at the same time last year while price uncertainty prevails. Current quote for lint stands at 21 1/4 cents per pound and seed at $10 per ton.
Sikeston launched its National War Fund drive with a 12 000 dollar city quota and a 21 000 county target. Block workers will canvass door to door while special gifts are sought from local business leaders under City Chairman J O Knapp and listed Black chairmen. Henry Jackson leads the Sunset Addition effort.
A Sikeston library conference urged heavy fertilizer use up to a ton per acre to grow abundant vegetables. Speakers stressed fertilizing as the best method for robust crops. The event, directed by the College of Agriculture and extension service, drew agents from Cape Girardeau Scott Mississippi Stoddard New Madrid Pemiscot and Dunklin counties along with seed dealers. Speakers included Dr A D Hibbard Stirling Kyd and Clyde R Cunningham of the University system.
Billy Haters of Sikeston Troop 41 received the Gold Eagle Palm at the Sikeston district Court of Honor held at the high school. Other awards included Star, Life, First Class and Merit Badges across troops 41 43 44 45 49 142 143 Miner and Sikeston area units. Numerous Scouts earned the General Eisenhower award for paper collection.
Miss Dorothy Matthews of Sikeston High School was crowned Queen of Cotton at the first American Legion Cotton Carnival. She won from nine high school entrants with a $100 prize. The parade featured Benton High School floats winning best float and Queen Wilma Wade with attendants.
Governor Phil M. Donnelly commended the Sixth Missouri Infantry State Guard for their soldierly appearance and efficient duties during President Truman's visit to Caruthersville. Sikeston's Company D members named include Leo Russell and several corporals and privates. The Sikeston carnival parade opened at 10 30 with diverse floats and units leading to Malone Park carnival grounds where judges later announced results and a street dance closed the day.
The week featured clear sunny conditions with a sharp autumn nip. One rainy day on Sunday totaled .11 inches. High reached 81 degrees last Friday, low dropped to 35 on Tuesday, with fair weather and warmer trends forecast for Southeast Missouri.
Scott County leaders prepare for the Eighth Victory War Loan drive with Caleb Smith as County Chairman and Daniel Malone as City Chairman. Plans will be announced next week as former chairmen are invited to serve again. The county quota is 322600 with assignments to communities. Sikeston drive likely during the week of November 11 using the successful block plan.
A color filled Cotton Carnival parade last Saturday as three airplanes flew in formation over the business district. The planes, based at Robinson Airport east of town, were flown by Don Robinson and Ed Swann of Sikeston and Tr nce McCollum of Cairo. Robinson, owner and manager of the airport, and McCollum are ex Army Air Forces flight instructors. Swann is an airplane mechanic and garage proprietor.
The Alamo Inn near the airport in East Sikeston was destroyed by fire Tuesday night. The interior was practically ruined by flames and investigators suspect a stove left burning caused the blaze. The building housed the lodging quarters of Mr and Mrs Robert E Lee and their four year old daughter.
