The World This Week notes 14 year old Merrill Kenneth Wolf of Cleveland becomes Yale University's youngest graduate, pursuing piano as a life work, while his lawyer parents look on.
President Truman urged Congress to enact a year of universal military training for males aged 17 to 20, to be begun by 20, with eligibility at 18 or after high school graduation. He sought a small professional army with a trained reserve and no exemptions except physical disqualification, applying immediately.
Satisfactory progress is reported nationwide on the National War Fund Drive. In Scott County progress is incomplete with most communities yet to report totals. Sikeston has raised nearly $5000 to date under J. O. Knupp, while other city chairmen include D. W. Gilmore, Rev. H. G. Eggimann, Roy Ward, Fred Lewallen, Bud Mason, Fred Burger, Wm. Arnold, Wm. Proffer, Rev. R. Borth, Marie Alexander Diehlstadt, Clyde Sanders, R. A. Crowell, W. H. McGill, L. C. Williams, Ray Marshall, Margaret Rogers, Clarence Cantrell, and Morris Lynn. Ralph Carroll is co-chairman. C. D. Matthews III heads special gifts. W. S. Corrigan is treasurer.
Sellers of used passenger automobiles must file certificates of transfer with local War Price and Rationing Boards and the Office of Price Administration under an amendment effective Monday to keep price checks on used cars. The rule shifts filing from purchasers to sellers and allows mail filing, reducing purchaser trips to ration boards.
Among those who received medical attention at Sikeston General Hospital during the past week were Mrs. Leconard Jefferies Crowder J M Hartzell Robert Ellis and Walter Baker Sikeston James Sanders Morehouse.
Southeast Missouri saw a brief warm spell end with a Sunday shift to rain fog and cold. The week’s low reached 38 degrees while highs climbed to 79 last Friday October 19, with three quarters of an inch of rain and mist in the following days. Warmer conditions and minimal temperature change expected in the near term.
Col. Charles Lyle Malone of Sikeston received the Legion of Merit this week while a patient at the Army-Navy General Hospital in Hot Springs Arkansas He has served on active duty since 1940 and commanded the Fort Leavenworth War Department Personnel Center starting April 21 1942 The unit under his leadership was widely praised as a model for efficiency He later served as deputy commander after the end of the war and the release of Regular Army officers He was flown to Hot Springs two weeks ago in ill health and is reported to be recuperating and expected to return home to Sikeston
The Sikes ton City Hall council room will serve as a Regular Army recruiting station each Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A three-member team will meet interested men, with further details on the Army recruiting program and new advantages for service members in this issue of The Herald.
William Price Harris died in St Louis after a long illness. Born January 21, 1878, he left a son W P Harris Jr of Inglewood California and granddaughter Myretta Harris, plus sisters Mrs Clymer and Miss Harris and three nieces. His body lay in state at Welsh Chapel before funeral at St Xavier Catholic Church. The death notice also reports Mrs Harris suffering a heart attack upon learning of the news and remaining critical at home in Sikeston.
William King, 59, died in St Louis on October 16 and his body was brought to the Welsh Chapel for viewing ahead of funeral services to be held there tomorrow. Burial will follow at Charleston. Survivors include four sons Marvin King and William King Jr of St Louis, Thomas King stationed with the Army in Harvard Nebraska, J C King also in the armed forces, and a daughter Omeza King of New York. The St Louis sons are here for the rites.
Mrs LaVerne Mouser will travel to St Louis Saturday to join her husband S Sgt Mouser who served overseas and is on a 30 day furlough with his wife and his parents. Pfe Floyd W Davidson recently discharged after a year in the European theater arrived in the States last week and joined Mrs Davidson and their children. Pvt Monroe Randol, stationed at Camp Livingston La, has been discharged and will be home Friday.
The E. Martin paid a $61.50 fine after a charge of careless and reckless driving while drinking, arrested by the State Highway Patrol. Other cases heard by Judge Frank Smith this week included Leo Parks fined $16 for assaulting Minor Cobb Jr and Leonard Siggers fined $26.50 for disturbing the peace at an establishment east of Sikeston.
General Electric in New York unveiled a 100,000,000 volt Betatron X-ray device. The large glass vacuum tube six feet wide sits between two massive electromagnet poles and aims to produce cosmic rays in the lab. The company hopes to use the technology to explore power production from uranium and other atoms.
Birth notices list multiple newborns in October across Sikeston Essex East Prairie New Madrid Morehouse and surrounding areas. Parents named include Wyatt Chapman Barnett Tippy Chamberlain Woods and Edwards with births at local hospitals. A stray line notes a physical chemistry finding to dispel raindrops on a pilot’s turret.
Sikeston's building boom slows due to material shortages, with lumber, structural steel, concrete blocks, and brick scarce. The shortage, plus fewer workers, halts progress on many projects. Some contractors must rotate crews, delaying multiple buildings while plans for new structures await steadier supply and labor.
Joseph F. Cook, a Fireman Second Class aboard the cruiser USS Houston, is declared dead by the Bureau of Navy Personnel. Missing since March 15, 1942 after the Houston was lost off the Java coast on March 1, 1942, Cook spent his life in Morehouse and is survived by parents Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cook, four sisters Harriet Wah Mrs Melvin Sullivan and Mrs L M Secor, a brother Pvt Delmer Cook with the U S Army, and grandfather T F Norwood.
Irish potatoes will stay exempt from price ceilings until December 6. Ceilings on white potatoes were suspended September 14 as the Department of Agriculture projected a 1945 yield of about 432,895,000 bushels, one of the largest crops in years. Buying for the armed services has been cut, increasing civilian supplies. Prices will revert to the established ceilings on December 6 unless action is taken before then.
Officials narrow end date for shoe rationing to October 28 or November 1 with weekend or calendar month timing. Production runs about 2 million pairs monthly, near prewar levels, as plans consider ending rationing while tire rationing may follow in December. Mr and Mrs John McMullin host Mrs Sam DeLoach of Pensacola Florida as guest this week.
Leroy C. Leslie, cashier of The Bank of Sikeston, urges farmers to invest wartime earnings in Victory Loan bonds. He calls Series E the safest investment backed by the U S government, with a $4 returns for every $3 in ten years. He praises Series G for steady income and notes it suits elderly farmers. he argues patriotic and practical reasons to support the loan and meet quotas.
Sikeston sets November 8 for Victory Loan drive chaired by Daniel Matone with Elwood Taylor as co chair. Caleb Smith leads Scott county with a 322600 quota while Sikeston’s district teams prepare house to house calls. Black captains include Lough Dover Boyer and others as business closes at four to aid solicitors. The drive funds wartime needs and veteran benefits with U S Bonds offering strong returns.
Dr S M Sarno was elected head of the Morehouse Chamber of Commerce formed at a mass meeting in city hall. Sixty members joined, with Wm S Dillion as vice president Henry Hart secretary and BE E Street treasurer. The group plans a large factory to employ about 250 women in Morehouse.
A Sikeston ginner reports cotton showing good staple length before heavy rain this week. Ginnings nearly double last week and over 400 bales. Cotton price at 22 cents per pound, seed around 50 dollars per ton. Pinkers plentiful.
Price Administrator Chester Bowles warned rent and price controls must continue beyond June 30 to curb inflation. He said dropping controls would trigger explosive price rises in building materials and consumer goods, with real estate prices already up sharply. A second item notes cartoonist Bill Mauldin fleeing a Los Angeles divorce from Norma Jean Mauldin, seeking child custody of their 2-year-old son.
