William S. Knudsen told a Senate subcommittee a defense program requests 56 billion dollars to be spent by the end of 1943. Production is rising sharply with a peak expected next year as defense output scales up across industries.
Mrs Dan McCoy caught a ten-pound catfish Monday afternoon in the Wahite ditch west of Sikeston. She battled the big fish solo until help arrived, outwitting a visiting St Louis fisherman who came to show locals how to catch the fish but failed.
Miss Gladys Callender will host Miss Helen Brown of Madison Tennessee as her guest this week. Miss Brown is en route to Denver Colorado.
An annual meeting of the Boy Scout boosters will be held Tuesday night October 28. C H Butler Sikeston district chairman announces the gathering with location to be announced later. Civic organizations are invited to attend the dinner meeting at which Scout officers will be elected for the coming year.
The Missouri Pension Society will meet at 2 30 oclock Saturday afternoon October 18 at the Odd Fellows hall in Sikeston according to E G Grigsby secretary of the society All old people are urged to be present.
Cotton fields around Sikeston and Dunklin county are heavy with cotton but pickers are scarce in places. Ginners report little picking last week due to rain, yet more cotton arrives when weather permits. Seed cotton sits at 45 dollars per ton while lint stands at 16 cents a pound. Ginnings this week are light but season totals will exceed 7,000 bases. Tharon E. Stallings notes 11,741 bales ginned in Scott county for 1941 crop before Oct 1, far above 1940’s 1,400 bales.
Rev. E W Bartley named new pastor of Sikeston Methodist Church arrives tomorrow to lead the local congregation. He succeeds Rev. John L Taylor who moves to Jefferson City as district superintendent after four years here. Bartley comes from Ferguson where he led a three year pastorate and has Missouri roots with 22 years in the Southwest Missouri Conference. He is a Central College Fayette and Vanderbilt University graduate. Mrs Bartley is a trained church worker and Meridan College and Kentucky Wesleyan alumna with deep family church ties. The Bartleys have three children, including E W Bartley Jr, pastor in Kansas City, and John, a Navy ensign and Pensacola test pilot trainee.
Stanley Woods 23, son of W F Woods of Sikeston, was taken to Missouri Baptist Hospital St Louis with a crushed elbow after his truck was side swiped while returning from Matthews. He lost blood then was moved to Sikeston General Hospital before transfer. accompanied by Mrs Woods, his father, and mother-in-law Mrs Frank Dye.
Southeast Missouri enjoyed a brief stretch of bright October weather last weekend, but three days of clouds and showers followed. Temperatures rose from 34 to 63 degrees as damp air kept it feeling cooler. Forecasts by Albert Klamm predict weekend lows around 40 and highs between 65 and 70 with generally clear skies and little rain.
Mrs. Frank Alexiou was named acting superintendent of Sikeston General Hospital effective yesterday by the hospital committee of the Sikeston city council. The committee includes C. H. Butler, T. F. Rafferty, Loomis Mayfield and Mayor G. W. H. Presnell. Mrs. Margaret Bowman was superintendent since the hospital opened in September 1940.
Sikeston welcomed about 75 privates and non commissioned officers from Company K for a fifteen days furlough ending two months of maneuvers. Lt. Staley and Lt. Johnson also on furlough, Capt. Wilkinson on a Fort Benning refresher, Col. Dudley and Major Dye visiting families. An 80 truck convoy carrying 1200 soldiers from Jefferson Barracks paused in Sikeston en route to Memphis for a Blue Raiders game.
The home of Mr and Mrs George Seufert on North Handy street burned about midnight last Saturday. Investigators suspect defective wiring caused the blaze which ruined all household furnishings and clothing while the family was away.
Mr and Mrs C C Buchanan depart with their daughter in law Mrs Amos Buchanan of St Louis for Corpus Christi Texas to spend two weeks with their grandson Bryan Buchanan stationed in the Navy air school there.
Thirteen Sikeston residents are among 32 Scott county men summoned under the Selective Service Act for October 20. They will depart Benton at noon for Jefferson City for final physicals and posting. The list includes Charles Vanson Jr., Marvin Miller, Leonard Bartling, and others with occupations ranging from bookkeeper to CCC painter, with notes on current residences and transfers.
Rainy days bring cotton workers to Sikeston shops as money returns to circulation. Farmers, pickers, and merchants report a surge of cash purchases from used autos to curtains and new farm gear, reflecting a rare period of prosperity in Southeast Missouri.
Federal inspector from Omaha Col McElroy commended Sikeston National Guard Armory as exceptionally well kept with equipment in excellent condition after today's inspection. He also inspected Cape Girardeau and Dexter armories, accompanied by Lt Col Powell and his family.
Scott County Chapter of the American Red Cross holds a 7:30 PM meeting in Benton courthouse to plan the annual roll call. Chairman John J. Reiss says the county will be asked to double last year score. all who are interested in Red Cross work urged to attend.
Sgt Luke S. E. Reed from Camp Robinson Arkansas is on a 15 day furlough visiting his parents Mr. and Mrs S E Reed.
Jesse Pullen night gunner at Trailback Plantation near Sikeston sustained a right hand injury Tuesday night while cleaning damp cotton from saws. He was taken to Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau for emergency amputation about two inches above the wrist. His condition today is reported as satisfactory.
Mr and Mrs W P Baines of Metropolis Illinois will be guests tonight of their daughter Mrs Lewis Buchanan and family, sharing a family gathering and visitation.
The Scott County Milling Company resumes full operation after a three week strike. A new contract, valid to October 9 1942, adopts a union shop under which workers must join the union within 30 days. No wage figures were released beyond a slight increase during a wage freeze.
Randol Wilson of Sikeston announces bids for a mail exchange plan between Sikeston and Matthews. Night arrivals for Matthews will be picked up at Sikeston before 6 am and delivered by truck, while Matthews outgoing mail will be carried by train and dispatched from Sikeston each night. This aims to end delays caused by sacks bursting and trains not stopping at Matthews.
