United Nations Preparatory Commission opts for a U S seat over Switzerland with San Francisco raised as a possibility. Truman proposes nearly 40 billion dollars in current year cuts and the Army plans vast postwar demobilization and prisoner repatriation.
The Sikeston Planning Board, urged by Clint H Denman editor of The Herald, recommends an auxiliary paved highway in the city's western sector to handle traffic to cotton gins compress oil mill and other industries. A proposed $82 410 project would use federal and state funds with two route options leaving Highway 61 south of the double S curves and reconnecting near West street. The plan will be submitted to the State Highway Department division office. C L Blanton Jr chairs, W S Corrigan secretary, with W H Sikes J S Kevil and Ralph Potashnick on the board.
DeWint Zarkor, a recently returned veteran, bought the corner house at New and Ruth streets previously occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Tharon Stallings. The home was built by Mrs. Viene Shupe of St. Louis. Stallings have been the only occupants. Zarkor serves as assistant manager of the Scott New Madrid Mississippi Cooperative Association, with the sale handled by W. Caleb Smith.
The Globester giant Army Transport Command plane is en route to Washington D C for seven tonight after landing at Hamilton Field San Francisco at 5 18 am and taking off at 8 35 am completing a world circumnavigation in 148 hours and 2 minutes. Four planes supported the journey with an average speed near 200 miles per hour.
General Douglas MacArthur this week tightened control over Japanese politics by restricting the Cabinet and curbing civil service promotions in southern Korea. He ordered the release of political prisoners and announced evacuation of all U S and Allied POWs and civilian internees in Japan and Korea. Of 32,407 listed, 30,805 are en route home, 1,390 dead, 212 stragglers.
The 1944 fur market set a standout record with sales near 426,280,793 dollars. Trappers earned 75 to 100 million dollars for their catch. Musk rats supplied most of 1011 pelts, and mink sales reached about 650 thousand. Retail fur and fur trimmed apparel sales rose by about 13 million dollars over 1943.

Word from Fort Leavenworth says Colonel C L Malone who led the Army Reception Center for three years is seriously ill at the army hospital there due to high blood pressure. His brother John Malone Mrs Malone and nephew Daniel Malone left early this morning for Fort Leavenworth.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon in Memphis for Mrs Fannie Sanford 88 who died at her home in Morehouse Monday of a heart ailment She formerly lived in Memphis but had been in Morehouse for years She is survived by her son Lonnie Sanford in the armed forces and a sister Mrs Lillie Gordon of Memphis Interment will be in Memphis with Albritton service
President Harry Truman is to speak at Caruthersville's annual American Legion fair with Secret Service planning in place. A large parade is canceled per agent advice while Truman plans quiet visits to old friends. Governor Donnelly will also attend Saturday night events.
Sikeston City Council approved two ordinances at the October meeting. A no parking zone in front of the International Shoe Factory on East Matone Avenue to aid loading and unloading runs 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. A second ordinance limits vehicle weights on North Stoddard Street to 20,000 pounds total, 13,200 pounds per axle, and 500 pounds per inch of tire.
President Truman orders seizure of strike bound oil refineries in 15 states after protracted industry labor talks fail to bridge a 30 percent wage demand by CIO Oil Workers Union. Labor Secretary Schwellenbach recommended the move citing company rejections of an alternative plan as White House sets necessary orders.
Sikeston High School celebrates Fire Prevention Week October 7 to 13 with a Wednesday assembly October 10. A mock trial play The Trial of Fire directed by Robert Walker features Georgina Sutton as arch criminal. other pupils in speaking parts include Jolly Bailey and David Rowe. An outdoor demo by the Sikeston Fire Department on chemical extinguishers follows the play.
General Curtis Lemay, commander of the Twentieth Air Force that conducted the B 29 raids on Japan, may become Ohio’s new senator. He is en route to Washington as the governor weighs him for the vacancy left by Harold Burton’s Supreme Court appointment. He would be the first World War II general to enter politics.
Secretary Vinson in Congress proposed a 5.09 billion dollar tax reduction for individuals and business, the first in 16 years. He urged repeal of the wartime excess profits tax on corporations and phase‑out of high wartime excises by July 1, 1916 on fur coats jewelry cosmetics and transportation.
The Sikeston District Boy Scouts announce a Court of Honor at Sikeston High School auditorium on Monday night Oct 15. Scouts expecting advancements must submit reports by Oct 9. The Chicago Cubs defeated the Detroit Tigers 9 to 0 at Briggs Stadium in Detroit driving the most lopsided World Series opening game since 1931. The series resumes in Detroit before moving to Chicago for Friday and Saturday games.
Henry Gayle Allen 52 of Jackson and brother of Joe Allen of Sikeston died Tuesday at Veterans Hospital in Marion where he had been a patient since August. Native of Oak Ridge he was the son of the late Mr and Mrs Tom G Allen. Surviving are his widow a daughter Rosalie his mother Mrs Mathilda Allen three brothers Gus Richmond Wash Joe Sikeston Kurre Jackson two sisters Mrs Joe G Birk and Mrs W Arthur Adams Jackson. Funeral arrangements pending word from the brother in Washington.
The USO reports more than a billion persons served across its camps clubs lounges and troop facilities as of September 1. Attendance at USC Camp Shows and related venues totals over 139 million service members and civilians worldwide. The operation list includes 2,161 clubs staffed by six partner groups led by YMCA and other major organizations.
James E. Nichols, 45, of Newport Arkansas, died Saturday at Sikeston General Hospital from a paralytic stroke. He worked at a carnival in Morehouse and was found unconscious in a tent. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Taylor Chapel, with burial in Carpenter Cemetery. Survivors include daughter Estella of Augusta and brother Ollie Nichols of Jacksonville.
Large plans are nearing completion for the Cotton Carnival in Sikeston on Saturday October 13 under the Henry Meldrum Post of the American Legion. The highlight is the selection of a Southeast Missouri Queen of Cotton who will be awarded 100. Several surrounding towns plan to send candidates. The parade starts 10 a.m. at the Baptist church led by marshal Sam Wilcox, moving through Malone Stoddard Front Kingshighway Center to Malone Park. The queen contest will crown the winner at the park amid amusements and hourly prize drawings. Bands from nearby towns will perform a massed concert in the afternoon with ample refreshments for all attendees.
Plans to close the Scott County Ration Office at Oran on December 11 were announced by Wm. H. Bryan, director of the St. Louis District Office of Price Administration. An office serving Scott and Mississippi counties will be set up in Sikeston, though space is not yet located. The consolidation is part of a plan to close 38 of 69 eastern Missouri offices by January 1, with county boards retaining local authority. Public need not visit offices, and New Madrid remains unaffected.
Col Arnold Roth of Cape Girardeau recently placed on inactive status by the War Department will address the Sikeston Chamber of Commerce at its October meeting. The event is Monday night at the Dunn Hotel dining room with Roth recounting overseas service in Africa Italy Yugoslavia Czechoslovakia and England and taking questions from members. President Ralph Potashnick will preside.
The lowest temperature this season fell to 49 degrees this morning. A cold spell followed a high of 90 on Friday, with Saturday at 57. Weekend rain totaled 1.17 inches and 0.99 inch Monday, summing to 2.16 inches for the week.
