Southeast Missouri residents are urged to celebrate Thanksgiving by reflecting on abundant crops and favorable weather while appreciating freedoms and rights. The message notes record yields in wheat cotton corn and soybeans and highlights the nation’s values of worship speech and personal liberty for citizens and the persecuted worldwide.
Sheriff notified Monday that the Black and Sons store in Vanduser was robbed Sunday night with merchandise valued around 12000 dollars. Norman Griffin, an employee, found the break in Monday morning after returning to the shop. Entry was gained by breaking a small side window. Don Black identified as thief of thieves took 500 pounds of coffee eight to nine cases of shotgun shells 50 cartons of cigarettes and three .22 rifles.
Powell B McHaney of St Louis president of General American Life Insurance Co will keynote the Southeast Missouri Council Boy Scouts of America annual recognition dinner in Kennett on Nov 27 The event at the Armory is open to the public Three Silver Beaver Awards will be presented and other honors given McHaney a Dunklin county native and Who's Who in America member is noted as an outstanding scouting speaker and national figure
A gas tank exploded at Bill Miller's Crowder home around 8 30 p m Monday setting the residence ablaze and gutting it. Miller who was away at Carl Dees store lost all belongings. Firemen battled grass flames threatening Bill Pratts property but contained the blaze.
Funeral services for M. P. Estes will be held Wednesday at 2 30 p m at the Essex Methodist Church with Rev C N Gaines officiating. Burial follows at Essex Cemetery with Strickland Rainey Funeral Home in Dexter providing services. Estes born February 9 1878 in Bellinger County taught in Scott County and later worked in insurance and oil. Surviving family includes three sons two daughters many grandchildren and great grandchildren, plus two brothers.

The Chamber of Commerce membership drive ended Friday with 29 new members signed by two of three teams. Team One led by Bruce Lewis reported 12 memberships, aided by J D Harper and others. Team Three led by Bill Pinnell listed several members. First place may shift once Team Two reports, possibly surpassing seven new members.
Funeral services for William Ernest Batson aged 49 of East Prairie will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at McMikle Funeral Home in Fast Prairie. Thelma Batson his widow and two sons William and Ernest plus four daughters, two sisters, and nine grandchildren survive. The service will be conducted by Rev. Warren Roney with burial in Dogwood Cemetery after the rites. Batson died Monday at Nelta Community Hospital in Sikeston after a paralytic stroke.
On a Monday about 6 30 p m on a gravel road east of Crowder two 15 year old boys were in a wreck that sent one to the hospital with a broken clavicle and led to the driver being charged by the State Highways Patrol with careless and reckless driving The car owner Elmer Lester was arrested for permitting an underage person to drive The patrol says the young driver was going too fast at a T intersection he failed to turn and the car hit a ditch overturning
A long planned project reaches realization as Scott, Mississippi, and Stoddard counties tuberculosis groups join New Madrid health unit to fund a Minograph X ray unit for Missouri Delta Community Hospital. The hospital will administer the program and provide chest X ray screenings for admitted patients as part of a TB case finding and cancer early detection effort. The unit costs 3685.60 and will be shared by the participating agencies proportional to hospital admissions.
A Poplar Bluff man, Gawen Palmer, 26, was shot and killed while attempting to burn in a drive in owned by Mil and Mis Ted Cooper near their home. The Coopers awoke to a disturbance and reported Palmer opened the front door before being shot. Police found a car and pursued a suspect but no arrest was made. The incident occurred about three miles northwest of town. Palmer was reportedly near 30 miles west of Maatupiis, Penn.
Anta Mae Kluesner 98 of Route One Oran died at home Sunday after a lingering illness. She was born December 21, 187? in St. Joseph Pennsylvania and married to Mr. Kluesner on March 1, 1827. Survived by husband four sons eleven grandchildren and numerous daughters and sisters. Her wake was at Smith Funeral Home with services at Guardian Angel Church Wednesday. Burial in church cemetery followed. Parish members and St Anne Sodality recited the Rosary.
Benton High School Senior Class presents a three act mystery comedy It Walks at Midnight at the high school gym Friday November 28. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. at Benton.
Mr and Mrs James Filfett suffered injuries in a traffic crash on Highway US about 18 miles from Memphis while returning from a Mexico honeymoon. Mrs Elliott former Darie Crosno and their daughter were hospitalized in Memphis with skull fracture, jaw and dental injuries. An oncoming truck swerved into their path causing the collision. The Elliotts were en route to New York for a job when the crash occurred.
The Henry Meldruny Post No 114 American Legion will not meet this Thursday due to Thanksgiving. The meeting is postponed to Thursday nov 29 with Eddie Warren assistant adjutant of the state department present to discuss membership and representatives from Charleston New Madrid Dexter Benton Risco and Bernie will attend. Legionnaires urged to attend this important meeting.
At a Kiwanis Club meeting Art Walhausen presented a check for 2185.65 to Raymond Richey of St. Francis Hospital polio department. The funds came from the annual polio football game played last Thursday between Cape Girardeau and Charleston high schools.
Mrs T C McClure hosted a Monday afternoon tea at her home to honor her mother Mrs J E Etherington on her 83rd birthday with about 12 friends as guests.
An elderly bearded man in khaki clothing robbed the Fast Prairie Drive-In box office about 8:05 pm Monday, taking between $30 and $55. Miss Faye Cole, cashier, alerted police as the suspect fled toward a car nearby. East Prairie police investigated but found no trace of the robber. The theater is owned by Earl Ferrell.
An open meeting will be held at Rusy Rock law on Thursday November 29 to discuss cotton industry plans and progress. Co chairmen Jack Hunter Jake Weaks and Harold Hill will lead with speakers from the National Cotton Council of Memphis. The event aims to report new uses and markets for cotton and gather grassroots reactions from producers ginners and others in the area.
