Loomis Mayfield Jr. Loses Part of Hand in Duck Hunting Accident
Loomis Mayfield Jr. lost two fingers and part of his left hand after his 12 gauge automatic shotgun discharged during a duck hunting trip on the Mississippi near Thompson's Bend in Mississippi County. With companions he attempted to reach St. Mary's Hospital in Cairo two hours later. doctors amputated the middle and ring fingers and part of the palm. Mayfield's condition improved as he rested, with the index finger also badly injured.

The former Helen Vera Dudley and her husband Leslie T. White left to return to their Chesapeake Bay home after visiting Col. and Mrs. Dudley of 206 Dorothy Street. White, a renowned author, and his wife split time aboard their 43 foot schooner docked at Oxford Maryland. White, a Canadian native, spent years with the Los Angeles DA Bureau before writing for major magazines. He has published several books and is working on a Sixteenth Century naval novel while also selling autobiographies to film. Ivan the midget monkey accompanies the couple on its travels.

Members of the Southeast Missouri Drummers' Association gathered at the Dunn Hotel for their monthly meeting led by vice president Ben Richter of St. Louis. Christmas Seal Sale Will Start Monday
Christmas Seals will be mailed out November 22, Joseph A. Leslie, president of the local association, said. The mailing list was expanded to 4,929 envelopes, with a $3,000 local goal and 80 percent of receipts kept locally if criteria are met. Offender Fined for Driving Without License Plate
Earl C. Wiggins of Metropolis Illinois was fined five dollars and costs after pleading guilty to driving an automobile without a license plate in Magistrate's Court. Federal Judge Ruby Hu len of St. Louis directed a new jury be impanelled for the trial of three white men and seven Negroes from Poplar Bluff on alleged election law violations during the 1946 elections.
