The United States Employment Service reports in a survey of three cities that 1,500,000 people are seeking work, with many passing up low paying jobs. Officials say accepting work would cut take home pay by 34 to 49 percent for men and 49 to 53 percent for women, while 700,000 openings were listed nationally in the last check.
Missouri highway leaders and more than two hundred residents met at the Armory to urge funding for postwar road work. They backed raising the state gasoline tax to as much as four cents per gallon to finance a vast building program, with focus on farm to market roads and connections for every farm to an improved route.
Bill Woehlecke of Sikeston was re elected as district representative of the Florist Telegraph Delivery Association at the Cairo meeting last week. It marked the first re election in this district. The Cairo gathering covered Southeast Missouri and part of Southern Illinois.

The Herald editor declares his Sikeston home paid $55.06 in taxes while vacant lots and commercial properties are assessed far lower, urging equitable statewide and city assessments to fund needed storm sewers and public projects. He cites a $10,000 lot taxed at $460 and calls for January reassessment to align values with sale prices and salable value.
Lightning is suspected to have started a blaze that devastated the Matthews Consolidated School District high school, built of brick twenty years ago. The sixth through twelfth grades were housed there. the grade building escaped. Classes are being held in churches and rural schools. Superintendent D Norman Powell and the board of education listed.
Local ginners report 1099 bales of cotton ginned to date, about one third of the season’s crop. Prices trend around 23 cents per pound on grade with declines after recent rains. Seed price stands at $15 a ton. Available pickers are adequate, paid $2.00 per hundred pounds.
Scott county reports total war bonds sales around 225000 toward a 322600 quota. Sikeston shows about 150000 of 169300 quota with ongoing checks. Miner and Blodgett exceed their small community quotas while house to house sales continue despite rain. Nationwide victory bond sales reach 1128000000 with 465000000 in E Bonds.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 30 PM at Morley Methodist Church for M D Thacker 60 of Morley and Oran, formerly with Standard Oil, who died in Florida November 11 of a heart ailment. Survived by widow Lucy a son Horace in St Louis two daughters Opal Mangan St Louis and Margaret Brasher Newport R I four brothers Charles Washington DC Lee Newport R I Aud Memphis a sister in St Louis. Interment Morley Cemetery with Welsh service.
City engineers led by George S. Russell presented Sikeston’s first comprehensive storm sewer plan. Estimated total cost near 535000 with a federal loan aim. The five year plan uses 66 inch mains and adds auxiliary lines to relieve chronic flooding after rains.
A few hundred dollars were added this week to Sikeston's lagging war fund collections. The Bank of Sikeston reports a total of 6375 dollars deposited. Chairman Charles K. Dement hopes reports from other county areas, not yet received, will raise the total substantially.
Armistice Day in Sikeston 1945 differed from prewar celebrations. Fireworks and parades were absent. Most stores and offices remained open while the Bank of Sikeston and government offices were closed. No formal observance occurred.
The mercury dropped below freezing to 28 degrees this morning marking the first freeze of the week. The highest温 71 degrees was recorded on Monday November 12. Continued cold with fair skies is forecast for the next two days.
A joint report from President Truman Prime Minister Attlee and Prime Minister Mackenzie King states that once effective safeguards exist the secrets of the atomic bomb will be shared on a fully reciprocal basis. It calls for an international commission to control the bomb and for outlawing its use for destruction while urging elimination of all atomic weapons. The leaders stress the need to uphold the rule of law to banish war.
