The 170th Marine Corps anniversary ceremonies are set for next Saturday November 10 in St. Louis Mo. About 10 000 chrysanthemum blooms of 125 varieties will be displayed at the annual Chrysanthemum Show in the Jewel Box Forest Park opening Saturday with displays through December.
A large Southeast Missouri funeral tribute united Sikeston and Charleston for Frank David Lair who died Friday night at his North New Madrid home. Born 1869 in Shelby County he built a Charleston and Sikeston furniture business and served in church, Kiwanis Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce roles. Interment followed at the S O O F cemetery near Charleston.
A special meeting of the Missouri State Highway Commission will be held at the Sikeston Armory on Wednesday morning November 14 at 9 30 o clock. M S Gwinn chief engineer of Division Ten says the Southeast Missouri session will discuss highway needs with district leaders as the commission surveys pressing state needs and invites county judges highway commissioners and chamber road committees along with press to attend.
Local ginners report a continued rise in cotton ginning with 397 more bales than last week bringing the total to 6813. Ginning remains slow but steady as growers and pickers urge faster movement. Cotton grades hold good quality with prices from 20 to 26 cents per pound and seed at 45 dollars per ton.
Conservation officials report more than 600 deer killed by about 10 000 hunters during the three day season in Missouri which ended last Saturday. The deer were generally in good condition but hunting weather was unfavorable until the final day. Last year Missouri sportsmen bagged slightly more than 7 557 bucks.
Ten Army vehicles and a sound truck joined a salute as Sikeston’s State Guard Day ceremonies marked the start of a new statewide recruiting drive. The parade, with city officials, veterans, service members, and the Sikeston high school band, ended at Legion Park for a program led by David Blanton. Major Marvin Carroll, State Highway Trooper Gene Harris, and Capt. Earl Cook spoke as Col. Paul Jones was introduced. Captain Cook praised the observance and urged recruitment for Company D, which numbers 49 members and drills Monday nights at 7:30 at the Sikeston Armory. Eligibility ranges from 17 to 55, with parental permission for seventeen-year-olds.
Sikeston Fire Chief Milburn Arbaugh returned Saturday with a five point back deer on his car bumper from a Lake Wappapella hunting trip. The 250 pound deer was the only one reported by Sikeston hunters during the three day season. John Powell accompanied Arbaugh, and the deer's head with branching antlers is being mounted while the rest of the venison goes to the local frozen food lockers.
Extension of REA lines into hard to serve areas follows the Scott New Madrid Mississippi Cooperative buy of Stoddard county lines from Missouri General Utilities. The acquisition, approved by the Missouri Public Service Commission, includes 5.4 miles of distribution and 7.8 miles of transmission lines with Bloomfield additions, funded by a 54 486 56 REA loan and a total of 739000 in REA allocations.
Chairman Charles K. Dement of the Scott County War Chest urges completion of collections as Monday ends the drive. A total of 6100 has been deposited in Bank of Sikeston, covering Sikeston Miner and Salcedo. other county reports are pending. The county goal is 21000, with Sikeston asked to contribute 12500.
Mrs John A. Hitt was brought back to her home from Barnard Skin and Cancer Hospital in St. Louis Missouri last Thursday. She spent seven weeks there following surgery and is reported to be recovering satisfactorily. Her son Johnny Hitt traveled to the city to accompany her home.
Two Sikeston High School alumni Sgt Charles Branum and John T Griffin reunite after more than three years apart as prisoners in the Philippines and Japan. Branum, 25, spent about 3.5 years as a POW, reflecting on captivity, hope, and the drive to return home.
Sikeston Jaycees urged city council to back a plan to run Sikeston County Club for a year funded by a membership drive. After three years directors from the Jaycees would yield to club members. The council awaited formal resignations from current directors.
Farm Bureau membership drive led by captains Frank VanHorne and Simon Jirik starts November 15 with no kickoff dinner. Dee Pritchett will provide solicitors with talking facts. Benton PTA serves meal at Methodist church. Carl Luper reports Scott County reached one million Farm Bureau members by October 31 as a national county goal. Farm Home Week will be held November 19–20 at the College of Agriculture in Columbia titled Agriculture and Reconversion, featuring Roy Green of Colorado A and M and Gerry Thorne of Wilson and Company.
Mild damp and windy conditions persist with 64 degrees in the morning and a 73 degree high earlier in the week. Rain is expected today and a much colder night follows. The first killing frost Saturday night benefits farmers by aiding cotton boll opening and crop ripening, signaling a bumper soybean season. Mrs. Jennie Sikes, who had a paralytic stroke last week, shows signs of improvement after a period of semi-invalid status.
Victory Loan Day opens with stores closed at 3 30 pm as a city wide effort to sell Sikeston's $169 300 quota of war bonds begins under Chairman Daniel Malone. County progress shows about $100 000 of $322 600 quota sold. Miner leads with $7 000 for a $4 000 goal. Assistant city chairman Elwood Taylor coordinates block workers across districts with captains and volunteers listed. Page Five continues.
