Student Air Force pilot dies in Lake Wappapello plunge

Sikeston reports a Malden Air Base student pilot Paul Richard Nolan aged 20 died when his trainer crashed into Lake Wappapello during a solo proficiency flight. Hunters witnessed the low pass before impact near People’s Creek arm. The body was recovered five hours later. Authorities say the crash followed repeated low flights over the lake. Nolan was from Somerville Massachusetts, son of Mr and Mrs John A Nolan.

Charleston Woman Dies at Her Home

Mrs. Kittie May Holder, age 8, died Monday at her Charleston home after years of ill health. Born October 17, 1876 in Bardwell Kentucky, she died leaving Gill Holder her husband, two sons Raymond and John W., two daughters Alice Eldridge and Fannie Roach, a brother Robert L. L D Ramsey, chief, announced a five week fire school at the Malone avenue station starting Monday night. Firemen are urged to attend at 7 30. The course will cover methods to combat different fires and equipment handling.

East Prairie Doctor Martin Dies Sunday in Delta

East Prairie mourns Dr Samuel Preston Martin a beloved local physician and friend who served the Delta for decades. Born October 12 1877 he trained at Washington University Medical School and practiced in East Prairie from 1906 until his death. Survived by wife Lucy and two sons Bruce and Samuel, he delivered thousands of babies including a 182 pound single birth and twins during the 1913 flood. Burial was at the WOLW cemetery after services at the Christian church.

Local Church Council to Elect New Head

The Inter Church Council met at the Presbyterian church Tuesday evening but could not elect a president due to the minister nominee’s other obligations. Ballots will list ministers able to serve. voting and return are requested promptly. Officers elected last night were Reve Cecil King, vice president Rev Harlow Donovan, secretary, and A 2. Das, treasurer. The council approved a $50 contribution to the Combined Chest and welcomed Neve M. Blow and Rev. Chester Pulliam as new members.

Sikeston Trails in Scott County Lake Drive Effort

The Scott County Lake Association met at the Benton courthouse to discuss securing land for a proposed lake. Sikeston lags behind peers in funds and population, with only about 8300 raised of 8500 needed for deed purchase. Oran leads per person with 25 dollars each. If paid by Feb 1, 1957, the state will build a dam, stock fish, and maintain the lake, offering a premier fishing and picnic site. otherwise the offer may go elsewhere.

Man Killed Under Train At Morley

B Charles Uhlenhaut a 38 year old contract manager for the Bensinger Co of St Louis died under a Missouri Pacific local at the Morley junction twenty minutes after leaving Missouri Delta Community Hospital at 7 p m Monday He had been at Sikeston and Cape Girardeau for customer visits and left the hospital to return to St Louis He was born June 2 1918 in St Louis and survived by his wife Mildred a son Gerry and a daughter Town The body was taken to the Nunnclee Funeral Home for services.

A carp tagged March 31, 1954 and released near Perche Creek, Boone County, traveled about 700 miles down the Missouri River to Gavins Point reservoir within 18 months. The fish grew from ounces to 474 pounds and set a new long distance carp record in Missouri waters.
