The Southeast Missouri Drummers Association holds its 54th annual convention in Sikeston with activities ongoing and a parade planned. The parade was set to start at 4 PM at the Baptist church, travel down Kingshighway to Mattingly's Service Station, then turn onto Center Street toward Malone.

New Officers Elected in Sikeston Meeting
Frank C. Starkel of St. Louis was elected president this morning. Clyde Barbier moved to vice president previously treasurer. Earl A. Saeger re-elected secretary and E. Leo Riley named treasurer. J. E. McCue of St. Louis will be warden. Next year's convention site to be decided at mid winter meeting in St. Louis. Retiring president Ben Rider pledged full cooperation and thanked Sikeston citizens for hospitality.

Sikeston hosts sixth drummers convention with parade and dances
The Sikeston event features a Front Street bicycle race from Penney's to the Del Rey Hotel with prizes for decor, comics, and costumes, followed by velocipede and scooter races for children, a greased pig contest, a pet parade led by Marshall Hollenbeck, and a banquet at the Dunn Hotel with a Chuck Foster dance at the Sikeston Armory. The convention, chaired by Ed Rauth and started yesterday with a welcome by City Attorney George Kirk, drew about 60 registrants as the event marks Sikeston’s sixth Drummers Convention, last held here in 1941.

Scott County Sees Population Gain in Census Figures
Census supervisor Lloyd Poe reports Scott County may gain about 500 people since 100 years ago. As of Tuesday night the count stands at 30,604, up from 30,377 ten years earlier with some areas still to be counted.

About 85 members of the School Safety Patrol saw Bing Crosby in Riding High this afternoon as guests of Chief of Police Harold Wallace and the Malone Theatre. The free show was a reward for a years faithful service and Wallace said it was a pleasure to work with the Patrol.

Army Worms Threat to Crops Across Scott County
County Extension Agent Tom Stroup told The Herald yesterday that army worms were appearing in large numbers in many fields across Scott County. He said he visited fields from Sikeston to Oran and Silmo and found pests in most fields. Farmers are urged to be prepared to poison the worms as soon as they appear in sizeable numbers and he warned the worms pose a real threat to growing crops.

Tomato transplanter roars to work on Sikeston farm
A tomato transplanter at Stephen Hunter farms north of Sikeston on Highway 61 plants two rows at a time at 42 inch spacing. Operated by Bill Baker with Monroe Sullivan driving, the unit handles about 2000 plants per hour as five workers feed and place plants and two more water and position them. In five hours about ten acres were planted with two other planters nearby. Baker plans to plant 50 acres of tomatoes to offset cotton quota declines and diversify work. The planter was loaned from Baxdb Brooks Catchup Company. other units were at Frank Van Horne and E P Coleman farms.

Farmers to Visit Experiment Field Near Sikeston

Fire at Tyrone Auto Store Extinguished Quickly
A small fire at Tyrone Auto Store was put out with limited damage after smoke spread to nearby Jackson Hardware. Manager Bob Tyrone and his wife noticed smoke on returning from Malone Park square dances. Fire crews responded at 7:55 p.m. and again at 8:15 p.m. The blaze appeared to start in rear excelsior, with flames confined to the back room.

Swimming Pool Set to Open June 11 in City
The Junior Chamber of Commerce plans to open the city pool June 11.Jack Mitchell, pool committee chair, told the council repainting and a new diving board are needed and the pool’s machinery requires work. Last year the pool operated at a loss due to the polio scare. A $500 transfer to a swimming fund was approved.
