May 25 Will Be Poppy Day in Sikeston

Southeast Missouri Packing Company will begin operations next week in Sikeston with livestock from its own herds slaughtered Monday or Tuesday and finished products sold later in the week. An open house will be arranged later for public inspection. The firm previously operated in Cape Girardeau for 13 years under the late Anton Sebeck. The modern plant sits in a brick building east of Sikeston, south of Highway 60.

City Council OKs pool equipment purchase and sidewalk plan

Cotton Week Proclaimed In Missouri To Cut Surplus
Gov. Lloyd C. Stark on Monday proclaimed the week of May 17 1925 as Cotton Week urging Missourians to curb a domestic surplus of more than 13 000 000 bales through expanded purchases of cotton goods. Endorsed by President Roosevelt and Cotton Belt governors, the event is the most successful cotton sales drive on record with about 400 of 1000 area chambers participating and sponsorship in 253 more communities by local civic clubs.

Youthful Salesmen Support Cotton Week in Odd Drive
Four year old solicitors in Sikeston offered to sell cotton to a housewife on Tuesday morning. A penny bought a frayed wad of cotton, later traded for candy as part of a neighborhood effort called Cotton Week. The boys, Carl Wilkinson and Sammy Bowman, described a few unfriendly reactions but continued their door to door campaign. Sales for the day were candy and one penny, with cotton gathered from a lawn behind Leo Fisher’s home.

Roosevelt seeks over one billion for national defense
