Sikeston public schools show 1940 enumeration of 1117 boys and 1130 girls, up from 988 and 908 in 1939, with colored school rising to 186 boys and 161 girls. Total legal school age children reach 2494. overall enrollment around 1600. Freshman students under Miss Adilda McCord conducted the count. Attendance rules will be stricter next school year.

Army plane forced down near Pocahontas Arkansas
A large 14 cylinder radial army attack plane was forced to land near Pocahontas Arkansas last Friday afternoon after engine trouble. Major Palmer ordered dismantling and shipping to Scott Field Illinois for study, with wings and tail sent by rail and the body hauled by truck. Janitors Attend Southeast Missouri School in Sikeston
Forty janitors from Missouri public schools gathered in Sikeston for a week long janitorial school directed by the State Board of Education. Dr. N E Viles led sessions at the high school with three instructors in housekeeping maintenance and heating. Three year old Edwin Mark Fuller of Portageville vanished for three hours Sunday morning before being found wandering along the Missouri Pacific tracks east of Highways 60 and 61. Police and many Sikeston residents aided in the search as he headed toward the airport where he had previously been taken to see airplanes. He calmly told his mother he was going to see the air planes.

The 1200 soldiers of the Second Infantry Regular Army will camp at Sikeston airport for a night on May 28 or 29 while en route from Fort Beauregard Louisiana to their home stations Fort Brady and Fort Wayne Michigan and Fort Sheridan Illinois. They travel 306 trucks the route via Sheridan Arkansas Poplar Bluff and Highway 60. Capt Meyer and Cpl Jarboe coordinated the stop thus exciting civilians and military observers alike.
