Large Meteor Seen by Sikeston Residents Friday
A dazzling meteor, possibly among the district’s largest, was observed by Sikeston residents and other Southeast Missourians Friday night. Kenneth Williams of the municipal light plant reported it at 7 pm in the northwest, noting blue white color shifts and a sizzling sound. It was heard in Poplar Bluff and likely fell between St. Louis and Poplar Bluff.
Brilliant conjunction of Venus and Mars captivates sky watchers
An Associated Press dispatch notes the 40 year rare pairing of Venus and Mars visible in the western sky at 6 p.m. Saturday. This will be the first time since 1898 that two major planets appear that close, with Mars passing behind Venus from May 5 to 7 and the pair separated afterward.

Scott County court in session Monday May 2 reduced the 1938 tax rate by five cents per $100 assessed. Novelty corn popper installed at The Bijou
Last week The Bijou Confec tionery installed a corn popper that automatically pops corn after inserting a coin. In about a minute patrons receive hot, fresh popcorn. It is the only machine of its kind in Sikeston and has attracted many visitors. A new Frigidaire electric cooler with 210 bottle capacity was also installed to help chill drinks for Bijou customers.

Bertrand Man Fatally Injured In Highway 69 Crash
John Collier, longtime Bertrand resident and former Bank of Bertrand president, died after a head on collision on Highway 69 four miles west of Charleston at 5:15 yesterday. R M McCombs and Earl Bowman of Jackson were not seriously hurt. Investigators cited Collier driving on the wrong side. Funeral services set for Bertrand Methodist Church with Masonic rites at Oak Grove cemetery. Survived by widow and six children in Bertrand Houston Oklahoma City St Louis and Truman Ark.

Child Injured When Struck By Automobile
Jean Maxwell, daughter of Mr and Mrs J L Maxwell, was struck by a City Cab driven by Wilburn Cockrell at the North Ranney and Tanner streets intersection after Sikeston High School May Day fete. She suffered cuts and bruises, was treated by Dr T C McClure, then returned home.

Fractured Shoulder Toll of Auto Wreck
Miss Esther Jane Greer suffered a fractured right shoulder Sunday afternoon when the automobile on Big Bend road Cape Girardeau failed to make a turn and plunged down an embankment. The car owned by D L Fisher of Morehouse and driven by his daughter Helen overturned and landed upside down against two saplings. The driver lost control because the steering apparatus was hard to manipulate. Greer received medical treatment at St Francis Hospital and later returned home. Mary Jane Sikes Mary Louise Montgomery and Catherine Ann Cook rode with them and escaped injury.

Notice of a change in 1958 allotment procedures arrived late Monday and stopped corn wheat and general allotments while cotton allotments were not affected. Funeral services for Emma Briggs 79 a Sikeston resident were held at the Church of the Nazarene with Rev C F Transue officiating. Interment followed at Oak Grove cemetery in Charleston. She fell and fractured her hip several days ago and did not recover. Survived by husband Joseph Briggs four children Jack Thompson Sikeston Tom Thompson Morehouse Mrs Ethel Johnson and Mrs Vergil Geiger St Louis thirteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.

Last Rites Held for James H Inman in Sikeston
Funeral services were held at 10 am Tuesday at the Moore avenue residence for James Henry Inman 51 who died May 1 after a two year illness. Rev. John L Taylor led the Methodist rites. Interment followed at Memorial Park. Born May 27 1856 near Memphis he moved to Scott county in 1865 then Sikeston in 1892. He married Mary E Foley on November 20 1879 and had seven children four surviving: Eljah John Inman and Mrs Frances Moody of Sikeston Earl Inman of Cape Girardeau. He had nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He joined Richwoods Methodist church 48 years ago and later remained active in the Sikeston Methodist church. He is survived by his widow two half siblings Will Barnes of Winfall Ind and Mrs Kate Sasse Greenville Miss and Mrs Jos Marshall Crowder. Relatives from a distance included Mr Barnes Mrs Marshall and nephew Joe Shanks Blytheville Ark.

Mrs. Alvie Evans 75 of Pharris Ridge died at home Sunday afternoon May 1 after a long illness. Funeral arrangements were not stated. Crop Allotments To Be Enlarged In Missouri
Southeast Missouri counties growing cotton will see larger allotments for soil-depleting crops than first announced. County agents and Missouri farm extension officials in Sikeston discussed a plan to raise quotas for cotton, corn, wheat and other crops to a more normal acreage. The total for corn, cotton, wheat and other crops must not exceed 80 percent of farm land, with soil-building crops excluded. Sikeston Youth Free on Bond After Arrests
Lynda Miller a 19 year old Sikeston youth is free on $1000 bond after separate arrests by Scott and Mississippi county officials. He was charged with burglary and larceny in the Buckeye Plantation grain theft and implicated in the Farmers Grain and Seed Company robbery. He worked three days this week as a National Youth Administration employee under Street Commissioner Roy Beck. Bond signatures included R. D. Clayton M. G. Gresham and C. W. Voelker.
