At Hudson’s Cafe Tuesday night the Sikeston Junior Chamber of Commerce began a campaign to regulate bicycle traffic. Don Anselm heads a committee to study a proposed ordinance requiring bicycle licensing, a juvenile court, and fines or suspensions for violators.
Matthew S. Murray, former Missouri WPA administrator and Kansas City public works chief, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Albert L. Reeves in Kansas City to two years in federal prison for evading income taxes on $69,691. The government seeks $6,577 in delinquent taxes, penalties, and interest. no fine was imposed. Murray appealed after a defense plea for leniency, was released on $5,000 bond, and his sentence is subject to Circuit Court review.
Sixteen members of the Poplar Bluff Camera Club were entertained at Sikeston Portrait Studio last night with member work and model photographs. Models Miss Phyllis Harrison Miss Ida Mae Edwards Miss Rose Mary Putnam and Miss Mary Lou Sargent posed in varied costumes. Miss Celie Potter proposed forming a Sikeston amateur photography club and sponsoring an amateur contest soon. Poplar Bluff works are on display at the studio with viewing invited.
Kathryn Penney Wilson arrived Monday March 18 at her parents home, a birth noted for having nine forebears. Great grandparents John A Young, John L Tanner, Charles Penney. grandparents Harry Young and Randal Wilson. grandmother Hazel Young. parents Mr and Mrs John Wilson. Other births mentioned: D A Merrick near Sikeston March 15. Wanda Fern to Thomas and Mrs Dobson Cape Girardeau March 16. a son to Don and Mrs Harris south of Sikeston March 14.
Willard Goslin president of the Missouri State Teachers Association and Webster Groves schools superintendent will deliver the commencement address to the 1940 Sikeston High School class at graduation Monday night May 20. Baccalaureate exercises will be held the preceding Sunday night September and announced by R A Harper.
R. A. Harper superintendent of Sikeston public schools was re elected for two years. Also reelected were Tharon Stallings Sikeston High School principal Miss Dorothea Miller Bailey School principal and Edwin Hartford South Grade School principal. Teachers will be elected after the board picks members on April 2.
State Highway Patrol sergeant Melvin Dace is among 13 troopers chosen for the Patrol Flying Squadron. The group will train in Jefferson City during the first week of April and serve as an official escort on special occasions, mounted on white motorcycles. They will also be stationed along highways during holidays with heavy traffic. Trooper Glen Lampley of Cape Girardeau is a member of the squadron.
Ira Dodd purchased the Sikeston Seed Store yesterday after it was previously sold to C. H. Butler last November. Dodd will be assisted by his sister in law Miss Leata Roberts formerly of Birmingham Alabama in managing the business.
State Senator Allen McReynolds, Democratic gubernatorial candidate for Missouri, will address Sikeston Lions Club at Palace Cafe next Wednesday. He will tour Southeast Missouri, speaking in Caruthersville and Charleston and visiting other district towns.
The four room home of Mr and Mrs James Sanford at Fornfelt was nearly wrecked by the Monday high wind splitting the house in two. The roof stayed intact and partly protected the furniture from heavy rain.
Sikeston residents and Sikeston Pro testant churches will gather at the high school athletic field at 6 30 Sunday morning for the first union sunrise Easter service in Sikeston. The Kiwanis Club and the Ministerial Alliance organized it with a speaker's platform loud speaker system and music by the Methodist Men Bible Class orchestra and George W Kirk led congregational singing. Rev D D MacAdams new pastor of Sikeston Presbyterian church will deliver the sermon The Dawn of Hope a large wooden cross will be erected behind the platform In case of bad weather the service moves to the high school auditorium.

St Louis Circuit Judge Thomas J Rowe refused the Missouri Press Association and St Louis Newspaper Guild permission to intervene as friends of the court in the contempt of court case against the St Louis Post-Dispatch The ruling follows a lack of record showing permission for intervention in a contempt matter The Brady extortion case connected to State Representative Edward M Brady and motion picture czar Nick had previously led to multiple mistrials and a demurrer ruling in Rowe's court
E P Coleman Jr of Sikeston has been invited by Fortune magazine to attend the seventh round-table conference on United States Agricultural Policy. The April 12 13 14 event will be near New York City. Only twenty five leading agricultural figures were chosen.
Children 12 and under are invited to the Kiwanis Easter egg hunt Sunday at 2 30 PM on the Country Club grounds. Two thousand eggs will be hidden with prizes for the most found by age groups under nine and nine to twelve. George W. Kirk chairs the planning committee, aided by L M Standley and Paul Brown. Bartley Schweiler chairs the boys and girls committee assisting.
Ed Winters of Sikeston was acquitted in Scott county circuit court of selling liquor without a license. He claimed his Sikeston Sunset Addition site is a hoarding house. A half pint of liquor figured in the case. The term is winding down as one of the lightest dockets in years. Several suits were dismissed or settled out of court including Missouri Utilities Co vs Laughlin and W. T. Raleigh Co vs Johnson. Harry C. Baldwin won a farm possession case after a Benton change of venue from New Madrid County Court.
W G Wick er, supervisor in the Tenth District, announced seven Sikeston residents as census enumerators for Scott county. The list includes Mr. and Mrs. Paul Rankin, Mrs. C L Blanton Jr, Straud B Crain, Dal S Harness, Mrs Wm S Smith, and Mrs Wm O Lasley. Training begins in Bloomfield as the force prepares to collect detailed government data.
President Lebrun asked Paul Reynaud to form a new French government after Premier Edouard Daladier resigned. Daladier refused the request to form a new cabinet. Reynaud plans to consult leaders and include most parties, with Daladier offered the War Ministry. Daladier’s war preparations and leadership during a siege influence the crisis.
State Highway Patrol found a 1937 Ford coach stolen from Cape Girardeau last night abandoned north of Sikeston. The car belongs to G. W. Marlory. No suspect has been apprehended.
Mr and Mrs J M Hartzell attended funeral services for Jimmy Hartzell 16 nephew of Mr Hartzell who died last Friday of appendicitis The youth was a member of the senior class at Potosi high school and had visited here on several occasions becoming well known to many friends.
County extension agents and Farm Security Administration supervisors from seven Southeast Missouri cotton counties met with FSA officials at the Dunn Hotel to set county elections for two landowners and two farm laborers to serve on an advisory committee. The group outlined a five point relief program, with tentative election dates around April 1 and meetings to determine the schedule.
The New Madrid County Music Festival will be held at Portageville on April 6 and follow last year’s plan with limited entries per event to avoid crowding. Critics R. M. Fowler and Miss Marjorie Ashcraft will provide feedback to teachers. Fowler to instrumental entries and massed band, Ashcraft to vocal entries and massed chorus. The program lasts all day from 9 a.m. with rehearsals at 4 p.m. Admission is free for day performances, and a nominal fee will fund the evening massed band of 125 and chorus of 265. Further details to be announced.
Gene McConachie, former owner of Western Auto Parts, becomes the Dunn Hotel clerk this week. Porter Kendall remains night clerk. Remodeling will begin soon, with barber shop moved to the adjoining building and a new coffee shop planned in the former barber space. Lobby and dining room redecoration planned and an elevator may be added later. Thirty of 52 rooms have been redecorated and furnished, with remaining work pending.
F. E. Mount has been confined to his home most of the week due to an attack of flu. His condition is not described as serious, and no other individuals are mentioned in connection with his illness.
