Weather dips to near freezing after warm spell

Dr Malcolm, Sikeston civic leader, dies at 69
Dr Pleasant Matthew Malcolm, 69, longtime Sikeston resident and former mayor, died at his home at noon yesterday after a long illness. Funeral services will be held Friday at two at his residence with Rev. W. F. Oglesby officiating. Interment in Sikeston Mausoleum. Survived by wife, five children Pleas Wade Early Roland and Mrs Lola Smith, one sister Susan Green, ten grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Tuberculosis Tests For School Children In Sikes Ton
Over 500 school children in Sikes ton Crowder and Vancuser were tested for tuberculosis by Dr H M Kendig and Dr T C McClure under the State Tuberculosis Association. Less than 5 percent showed symptoms. On March 30 a doctor from the association in St Louis will examine those with positive tests and recommend treatment.

Sikeston Man Burns in Poplar Bluff Fire
Roy Putnam, 46, son of Mrs. R. E. Putnam of Sikeston, suffered painful facial burns Tuesday afternoon when a fire damaged Allen Garner’s nearly finished Poplar Bluff home. The blaze began in excelsior and paper wrappings in a completed bathroom while floors were being finished. Putnam tried to smother the flames but they enveloped his head. He was treated at Lucy Lee Hospital and relatives said his condition was improving.

Scottish Rite Banquet Planned At Hotel Marshall
A banquet will be held at the Hotel Marshall on Tuesday evening March 31 for all Scottish Rite members of Scott New Madrid and Mississippi counties. Trucker Killed as Molasses Truck Hits Train Near Here
Delbert Legions 27 of Martin Tennessee was instantly killed late Tuesday when his truck loaded with molasses and potatoes collided with a Frisco passenger train at a grade crossing near Caruthersville. Legions had been marketing produce in Caruthersville and was en route home.
