The corner stone of the new St Francis Xavier Catholic church at Front and Stoddard was laid at ten this morning in a ceremony led by Rev. J J O Neill. Altar boys Patrick Noonan Richard Shy and Bernard Schaeffer assisted with holy water incense and crucifix. The stone lists church history the 1938 date and includes names of pastor Sisters Mary Florence Mary Peter Mary Lorenzo and Mary Edith trustees Louis Dumey A J Meunier H Layton John Welter T P Scherer and city officials architects and contractors. Work continues with brick work half done and interior finishing to begin in six weeks. a June opening is hoped.

Sikeston Group Escapes Injury In Wreck On Highway 61
A party from Sikeston escaped injury after their Plymouth collided with another car on Highway 61 north of Cape Girardeau during a heavy rainstorm Sunday night. Drivers Harry Dover and Harold Davis, both Sikeston and Cape Girardeau respectively, along with several young Sikeston men, escaped harm as mud caused a skid before impact. The group had been visiting relatives and attending events in Fayette and Columbia.

Scott County Sheriff III Hospitalized With Pneumonia
Sheriff Wade Anderson of Scott county was taken to Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau early Wednesday for treatment of pneumonia. He became ill Monday and pneumonia developed. He remains seriously ill but not critical and is resting comfortably, according to reports.

Resigns State Job to Run for Collector
Tom Scott, deputy warden at the Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City since January 1, 1933, tendered his resignation to Gov. Lloyd C. Stark Monday afternoon. A former sheriff of Scott county, Scott plans to move to Chaf fee within a week or two and will seek the office of collector of Scott county. His resignation becomes effective at the governor’s convenience. Scott previously served as Scott county sheriff from 1928 to 1932 and as deputy sheriff from 1920 to 1924.
