New Traffic Lights Now in Operation at 60-61 Intersection
Traffic lights at the three highway junction in Sikeston became operational this week at Highways 60 61 and 2. The four post signals regulate heavy traffic with a three lane crossing and left turn markings to reduce conflicts. Counts from October show 7200 vehicles daily on Highway 60 east of the intersection and about 10 percent more west of it with north south routes at about 80 percent of the total. Webb Electric Company installed the system for the Highway Department.

Former Fornfelt Man Killed in Arkansas River Job
William Riley aged 18 was fatally injured near Helena Arkansas while tying a barge to shore on a Simpson Oil Company river job. He died at 3:25 am after a 1:25 am accident on the river. He is survived by his parents Mr and Mrs Emmett Riley and eight siblings. Funeral arrangements awaited.

The Sikeston Board of Education outlines future enrollment growth and expansion for the 1950 51 school year following district consolidation. It authorizes 10 new teachers plus remodeling and equipment costing about 112 000 while expanding bus fleets and lunchrooms and approves a tax levy and constitutional amendment for school funding. The district relocates rural pupils to city buildings and plans new classrooms buses and salaries to accommodate 153 additional students next year.

Tomato Growing Talk Tonight by G and Suppigar

County Cotton Ginners and Producers Meet March 14

Captain Wallis Urges Action to Cut Route 61 Crashes
Captain O L Wallis of the Missouri State Highway Patrol writes to The Herald praising Southeast Missouri editorials on route 61 traffic dangers between Morley and the state line. Grain of corn in windpipe endangers farm child life
Dorothy K. Brewer an 11 month old daughter of Mr and Mrs Newt W Brewer was saved from possible death by removing a grain of corn from her windpipe after a hasty trip from their East Prairie farm to St Louis Children's Hospital early this week The child found several grains of corn while playing on the floor and swallowed them One grain wedged in her windpipe and after several failed attempts to remove it at home the parents borrowed an auto to rush her to hospital where she remains under observation.
