Sikeston City Council Seeks Federal Water Extension Financing
At a March 1950 meeting Sikeston Missouri city council approved seeking federal aid from the General Services Administration to fund water mains extensions. Engineers will supervise the project and apply for aid with Russell & Axon retained to handle engineering studies and plans. Public funds would be repaid by new water-user charges.

Automobile Juggernaut of Death Still Rolls on Southeast Missouri Highways
A two-vehicle wreck on Highway 49 near Annapolis killed Gerald Glenn Perry aged 20 of St. Louis and Nim Brewer aged 85 of Annapolis. Ray Harold Lewis also sustained injuries as three passengers in his car, Ruth Hughes 4 Paul Lee Lewis 14 Vernon Lewis 12, were treated at St. Mary’s Hospital Ironton. Another crash on Highway 25 near Bloomfield injured five, with Martha Graves critically hurt and transferred to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

Community figures Mr and Mrs Rex Johnson of Mount Vernon were guests of A H Johnsons. The Jonsen traveled after six weeks in Florida. Two injuries occurred Monday night in crashes on highways 61 and 60. Virgil Parson, 65, Cassville MO, suffered facial bruises and multiple ribs after his 1950 truck hit a hay truck. James Weekley, 35, Bertrand, stated tarpaulin caused him to stop. he was cited for obstructing traffic. William Porter, 64, East Prairie, jailed for drunken driving after colliding on Highway 60 near Mike’s Supply. Dorothy Galemore was injured in the Moulder vehicle collision. Virginia Baltzell, 34, St Louis, remained seriously injured after a rear-end crash on Highway 60 near Morehouse.

Red Cross Drive Opens Across Scott County Amid Crashes
A Red Cross fund drive started yesterday across Scott County with a goal of 7027 dollars, about ten percent higher than last year. The kickoff at the Dunn Hotel featured county and city leaders and ward captains planning a 100 percent canvass as several crash victims were reported in the region including Bernard Melton of Mount Vernon with a broken back and multiple others injured in a Highway 60 collision.

Hobart Woman Injured in School Bus Collision
Mrs. Haldo Hellman of Hobart Indiana was seriously hurt when the car carrying her and her husband and Mr and Mrs Ray Scherger collided with a school bus at Gray Ridge. The bus crossed the highway and the Scherger car veered into a ditch but struck the bus and overturned. The bus driver and eleven children were uninjured.

Farmers urged to apply early for cotton classification
Memphis Tennessee 1950 program details under the Smith Doxey Act outline procedures for cotton farmers to obtain classification and market news services. Groups promoting improved cotton may qualify by adopting a variety, filing an application, arranging sampling, and meeting member requirements. Large Increase in Girl Scout Members Reported at Meeting
The Cotton Bell Area Council met at Sikeston library on Tuesday Feb 28 with Mrs T A Martin presiding. The Troop Organization Report by registrar Mrs Leland Hill showed membership rising from about 400 in April 1949 to 1017 across 69 troops, not counting new or unregistered troops. Sikeston hosts 14 troops with 242 members. Financial progress toward a Southeast Missouri Girl Scout Camp totals about 15 000 of a 50 000 goal. The council approved renting Paducah Camp Bear Creek May 22 to June 11 and plans for 1950 camping. officer elections set for March 28 in Dexter.

A 1949 to 1950 Red Cross report shows Southeast Missouri counties donated 40,637.72 to the Red Cross last year while the agency spent 201,076.36 to aid flood and disaster victims across Bollinger Butler Cape Girardeau Dunklin New Madrid Pemiscot and Stoddard. Mississippi and New Madrid counties led flood relief efforts with 110,233.36 and 10,000 spent respectively. Malden shelter cared for 1,243 flood victims from three counties.

Three men faced fines and jail in magistrate court for careless and reckless drunken driving. Raymond Odell of Venice was fined 25 dollars and given 60 days, stayed on payment due to it being his first offense and his seven children. William Henry Porter Sr. of East Prairie was fined 25 dollars and sentenced to 90 days. Charles Lo Ashmore of Wolf Island received 25 dollars and 60 days with a 90 day license suspension. Saul Smith and Billis Bryant of Arkansas were fined 3 dollars and costs for transporting cars without proper licenses. Floyd Harvey was held on forgery charges with a 1000 dollar bond.

Floodway Farmers Start Returning to Evacuated Homes
A few Mississippi county floodway farmers have returned home as waters recede and more follow. Red Cross cared for over 300 families at Malden shelter since January evacations. Army engineers are moving back to Memphis after advising possible floodway operation and warning remains that highwater could recur. Official notice states Bird Point New Madrid Floodway not needed presently but highwater season not over.
