Clarence Scott was re-elected president of the Sikeston Chamber of Commerce at the annual business session and banquet held at the Methodist church. Eighty six members attended with officials from the Junior Chamber of Commerce Kiwanis Lions and American Legion. Vice presidents named were L M Standley H A Dunaway E P Coleman Jr George Lough Abe Shainberg and Harry Harty. Leroy Leslie remains treasurer and Harry Harty will continue as secretary until a successor is appointed.

About 100 Southeast Missouri city officials attend the Missouri Municipal League district meet in Sikeston. The two oclock afternoon session in the Sikeston library auditorium was led by executive director George A. Spencer and discussed league issues. An evening banquet at the Palace Cafe features City Attorney Robert A. Dempster as toastmaster, with Mayor G W Presnell welcoming visitors and remarks by Rev. John Taylor on democracy. Musical entertainment includes Mrs. Walter Ancell and performances by Sikeston colored schools singers under Joseph Gaines.

WPA garden project to start March 15
The WPA garden at the south grade school will begin operations March 15. Mrs. Jennie Sikes again offers the plot for lunchroom use, with WPA labor filling it. Last year the garden yielded about 1200 cans of vegetables used to feed around 300 children daily. P T A members Mesdames R. D. Sorrells and C T. Old supervise this winter's lunchroom.

The American Legion police force increases to 38 members with the addition of W. L. Haters and Claude Turner at a class session last night led by Major C. L. Maljone. Troopers Tandy and Wickham supervised instruction on traffic control and safety. City Attorney Dempster spoke on officers' arrest rights and Sheriff Hobbs discussed county law enforcement.

Equipment upgrade under way at Bijou confectionery
Additional equipment is being installed today at the Bijou confectionery on North Madrid Street. Vester Lipe manages the store. A 24 foot marble counter with a matching marble cabinet row is built along the north wall behind the counter. A five foot high mirror will span the cabinets. The new installation faces the original 20 foot marble fountain at the front entrance. A glass enclosed grill cabinet for sandwich making is now complete for use with the new counter.

Hospital runs aid in Cape Girardeau and Canalou
Mrs. Ben Chambers was taken to Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau Sunday in the Welsh ambulance where she is receiving medical attention. The Welsh ambulance also returned Mrs. Marshall Meyers to her home at Canalou yesterday from Southeast Missouri Hospital. Mrs. Meyers is convalescing from a recent surgical operation.

Legion to Have Birthday Party
Members of the Henry Meldrum Post of the American Legion and all ex service men eligible for membership will be honored Wednesday night at a dinner in the National Guard armory for the 21st anniversary of the Legion. James Mecum of Clinton Mo is to speak on The Legion on Parade. Mrs Mecum, president of the sixth district Auxiliary, will attend with Junior Auxiliary entertainment. The Auxiliary total stands at 70 members with 35 in Junior Auxiliary. the post has about 100 members and many more eligible.

Circuit Court Trials Open in March Term at Benton

Changes in Farm Security Program Enlarge Southeast Missouri district
Marvin Gray became supervisor of the enlarged Farm Security Administration district office, succeeding Carl Ross who is reassigned to Farmington. The expanded district covers nine counties Dunklin Pemiscot Mississippi Scott Stoddard New Madrid Butler Cape Girardeau and Wayne with offices in the post office building. The program aims to speed aid under the five point plan including standard rehabilitation and labor programs. 25 to 30 staff are expected. Approximately 150 families have received standard FSA rehabilitation loans to equip and stock farms, with 320 loans approved in total.

May 20 is set for the Sikeston high school commencement exercises for the 1940 graduating class. Supt. R. A. Harper announced the ceremony will be at the school auditorium at 8 o clock Monday night. Baccalaureate services will be held Sunday, May 19, with Rev. John L. Taylor preaching.

International Shoe Company Officials Visit Sikeston Factory
