Sikeston Municipal Light and Power Plant cut lighting rates by 16 percent and power rates by 12 percent after a Board of Public Works move. New lighting charges are five cents per 40 kilowatts and two cents thereafter. new commercial power is four cents per kilowatt hour for the first 50 and two cents above that, eliminating the second step. The change saves the average family about sixty cents monthly, with 1937 residence usage around 80 kWh. The plant has grown from 1019 to 1188 to 1220 customers from 1935 to 1957.

Fire Destroys Farm Home Near Vanduser
The large eight room home of Mr and Mrs John Watkins near Vanduser was totally destroyed by fire Monday afternoon. A defective flue is believed to have started the blaze discovered at 3 30 pm. Mrs Watkins and children were away and only partial contents saved. The loss is partly insured. An oil painting of Mr Watkins great grandfather General Nathaniel Watkins was saved along with a cedar desk and old papers lost. The couple and children are staying in Vanduser while they plan to rebuild.

Shoe Factory Shifts To 40-Hour Week On Temporary Order
The International Shoe Company's factory begins a temporary shift from a 30-hour to a 40-hour workweek for the past six months. Superintendent WL Huters said the longer hours were required to fulfill a special order and it is unclear how long the change will last.

State approves deed to new Sikeston armory site
City Attorney Dempster announced that the western half of Sikeston Chamber of Commerce Park has a deed approved by Attorney General Roy McKittrick for a National Guard armory. The property was conveyed to the State Board of Education with a civic use reservation, funded by city state and federal monies. Construction began after federal approval and sponsor funds were arranged with city payment.

W E Hollingsworth of Sikes ton was elected chairman of the Scott County Red Cross at a meeting of officers and civic representatives at Hotel Marshall. About 40 attended. Sikeston city council approved a contract with the Scott New Madrid Mississippi Cooperative Association to supply electricity for farmers across three counties via a 300 mile line. The Rural Electrification Administration funded initial work with 157000 dollars. The cooperative will buy energy and pay for metering while the city handles infrastructure and metering location. Continuous AC three phase 60 cycle power will be billed with tiered rates and monthly readings on the 20th.

Hospital Supervisor Dead at New Madrid
Mrs Alysse Coke of Little Rock died at 630 yesterday afternoon at her mother’s home in New Madrid after taking Ivsol that day. The 37 year old nurse had been hospital supervisor in Little Rock and was visiting with her mother and nine year old daughter Louise. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at Richards Funeral Home with interment at Evergreen Cemetery. She is survived by her mother, her daughter, and two brothers James Brown of New Madrid and Charles Brown.

Smithson county official Myers dies after illness
Joseph W. Myers a longtime Sikeston justice of the peace died this morning at 11 after a week with flu rheumatism and other illnesses. Born January 21, 1867, he moved from a Benton Commerce farm to Sikeston 33 years ago, served on the Scott County Court and as police judge, and was active in the Methodist church and lodges. He leaves a widow, a daughter Mrs Grover Baker, six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral at 10:30 Saturday at the Methodist church. interment Sikeston city cemetery with Welsh service.
