Red Cross Drive To Start March 1
Sikeston begins a Red Cross fundraising campaign on March 1 with a breakfast kickoff at the Dunn Hotel on February 28. City chairman Bob Mitchell and publicity head Robert Smith lead plans as Scott County’s 1950 goal is 7027 dollars, and ward captains will receive supplies at the breakfast.

Very Rev John J O'Neill pastor of St Francis Xavier Sikeston was invested as Domestic Prelate with the title Monsignor by Archbishop Joseph Ritter. The ceremony drew 55 visiting priests, Knights of Columbus, and about 500 attendees at a Rus tic Rock Inn reception after the church investiture.

Sunday Night Mail Service Is Assured Postmaster Malcolm Announces
Postmaster Malcolm reports the Post Office Department has ordered Sikeston offices to extend mailing hours to 10 o clock each Sunday evening. A four week trial earlier extended hours showed sufficient mail, with letters accepted at business district boxes until 10 and at the post office until 9 45 for same day dispatch.

Bank Robbery Shocks Gordonville Village
Two masked men robbed the Bank of Gordonville in Cape Girardeau county during morning hours, forcing cash from cashier Dewey M. Keller and assistant W. L. Winkler at pistol point. They shot two customers in the bank vault before fleeing in a blue 1919 Mercury, believed to be driven by a third party, as a fourth nearby customer freed the vault victims.

Flooding of Spillway Believed Unnecessary
The spillway flooding near Birds Fount New Madrid area appears unnecessary as the Mississippi River at Cairo sits around 4455 feet with the river edge stable. Red Cross reports 2300 evacuated with about 1000 sheltering at Malden Air Base while a few families remain in homes awaiting resettlement. Army Engineers say no levee blows are planned and the forecast calls for more rain then a gradual fall in river levels remains expected. Weather shows mixed temperatures and 1.79 inches of rain in the past week.
