Dorothy Tidwell a 12 year old girl from New Madrid qualified for Southeast Missouri's hall of fame for heroines by pulling her three sisters from a car that rolled into the Mississippi River. The tense rescue began when the car started to slip into the water. Dorothy swam out with Norma Lee and pulled Virginia and Billy Jean from the vehicle while their father searched for another child. The community plans a medal ceremony by the New Madrid Junior Chamber of Commerce with a Carnegie medal possibility and clothing donations for the girl.

Rural Electric Line From Sikeston to Start Soon
Construction of a 170 mile rural power line in Southeast Missouri will begin after 25 easements are secured. The Scott-New Madrid-Mississippi Cooperative Association reports staking has started, with 40 miles done and 70 miles required before work can start under Rural Electrification Administration. Funds cover wiring and plumbing, with loans 100 to 500 dollars per residence and down payment of 20 percent.

A diagnostic tuberculosis clinic was held at Sikeston city hall under the Scott County Tuberculosis Association as part of Christmas Seals efforts. Four cases require sanatorium care, with others needing home care. exams were led by Dr. George D. Kettelkamp and Dr. Kaplan, with preclinic tuberculin testing by local physicians and Dr. T. L. The Sikeston Natatorium on North Kingshighway will open Friday at 1 30 p m leased for the season by Joe and John Dover. The pool area has been cleaned and dressed rooms readied a free 50 000 square foot south side parking area cleared. The Sikeston high school band will play at the opening. Free swims for children twelve and under will be Tuesday mornings 9 to 10. Life saving instruction to be given later by Wilbur Ensor. Cape Girl Killed In Wreck Near Cape Girardeau
Miss Kathryn Burten fifteen year old daughter of Mrs. Annette Burten was instantly killed when the rear of the auto she rode in struck a culvert two miles northwest of Cape Girardeau. Five others including Pershing Kurre and Imogene Harms were treated for minor injuries. An inquest by Coroner E R Trickey ruled death accidental and unavoidable. Kurre said the car may have reached speeds around one hundred forty miles per hour before the machine swerved into the culvert.

Sikeston council raises city tax rate in special session
In a Friday night special meeting Sikeston city council approved a 10 cent per hundred tax increase for 1938, boosting the sinking fund levy to 70 cents and the general revenue levy to 50 cents per hundred. Aldermen Zacher Forrester Waggener and Miller voted yes, Rafferty and Smith opposed. A paving program update followed, with WPA project costs and new street curbing plans discussed. A committee was named to explore financing for the street project.
