Nearly 300 Sign For Play Program
Nearly three hundred boys and girls have registered by noon for the recreation program led by Supervisor Vernon Green. About 175 enrollees participate at the high school and south grade school, with two to three times as many in the high school play. Parents are urged to report daily to aid scheduling. A traveling softball team will be formed after a round robin tourney. Plans include games with Cape Girardeau Hayti and Charleston under lights. A weekly calendar features bicycle races boxing horseshoe pitching track tennis archery and basketball. The daily schedule starts with instruction in mornings and free play afternoons. Beginning Monday softball lessons archery baseball boxing tennis and track are scheduled. The industrial arts shop opens 8:00 to 12:00. Badge tests in August will determine winners across all activities.

Elise Named Bertrand School Superintendent for years
Bertrand school board selected Roy V. Elise, Sikeston high school superintendent for sixteen years, to lead the district for the coming year starting in September. A new $30,000 building nearing completion is slated to open by September 1, with a school bus serving the junior high. Elise will tutor and oversee four other teachers including Adagene Bowman of Sikeston who will teach music and English. Bricks saved from the old building will fund a future gym. Last year classes met in the Methodist church basement.

Outing at Iron Mountain Lake Hosts Local Party

Civilian Relief for China Drives $220 Raised
A $220 total was collected last Friday in Sikeston for Civilian Relief in China. Theodore Roosevelt, National Chairman, commended the effort and thanked the community, newspapers, and citizens for answering a call of humanity and aiding sick and starving Chinese children. Madame Chiang Kai-shek conveyed gratitude for the donor support and efforts to aid displaced families.

Services Held For Fred Paul A Sikeston Resident
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at the Delmar street residence for 70 year old Fred Paul a retired farmer. He died Saturday night at 10 15 of heart trouble. Paul born in Bavaria Germany in 1868 came to the U S in 1895 and lived in St Louis before moving to Sikeston area about 1900. He farmed thirty five years on land owned by Ran ney Applegate near Sikeston and moved into Sikeston over two years ago. Surviving are eight children Lillian Edgar and Mrs Joe Morrison of Sikeston Lexie of Davenport IA Mrs Lacy Sons of Alton IL Mrs Joseph Bechel of Moline IL Mrs Katherine Kerg of East Alton IL and Marshall of Kewanee. Burial was in the city cemetery with Welsh service. Pallbearers were Roland Malcolm Ben O Matthews Paul Buchholz John J Reiss C C Pinnell and R T Wainman.

Sikeston Farmer Seriously Burned
Fred Fears, a Sikeston district farmer residing east of Miner, was seriously burned last Friday afternoon while cranking a tractor. He suffered burns to his right arm and shoulder and was taken to Brandon Hospital, Poplar Bluff, for treatment. He had used coal oil to operate the tractor and gasoline to prime the motor when a spark ignited the blaze.

Mrs Mildred Carey, wife of Chesley Carey and mother of a three year old, died Wednesday of a complication of diseases at the Binford residence near Matthews. She was born in Kentucky on August 19 1915 and is survived by her husband two brothers and four sisters, plus five brothers in law and other relatives. Interment was in Memorial Park cemetery Sikeston.
