East Prairie constable Ivan Tompkins was ordered held on a felony charge after an inquest into the death of 21 year old Marshall Sams, son of farmer Charles Sams. Sams was shot while officers sought to arrest him for questioning in a $6 forged check case. Tompkins contends the shot was in performance of duty. Miss Della Willis, a Gables waitress, and Howard Worthington were injured when a Ford V-8 owned by Louie Largent and driven by Worthington overturned on Highway 60 two miles west of Wyatt. The car sped and failed a curve, sending it off the road. Willis, pinned under the vehicle, required hospital care in Cairo, Illinois, where she stayed for further treatment. Worthington escaped serious injury. The wreck caused about 450 in damage and the car was towed to Sikeston for repair.

Mill Company Driver Hurt In Accident Near Cardwell
Ralph Crutchfield Scott County Milling Company truck driver sustained painful injuries early Friday when the steering gear locked causing the trailer to overturn damaging the cab. The accident happened near Cardwell while en route from Sikeston to Truman Arkansas. He was taken to a Paragould Arkansas hospital for treatment including a dislocated breast bone and cuts and bruises.
