Missouri to raise fishing and hunting permits for 1953
The State Conservation Commission approved higher resident fishing and hunting permits. Resident fishing rises from 1.50 to 2.00 dollars and hunting from 2.50 to 3.00, with various combo and trapping permits also adjusted. Non-resident rates remain unchanged, while special local fishing fees at Lake Paho and August Busch Wildlife Area stay the same. Fur and fur dealer licenses see large increases, and commercial fishing rates double or more.

Foot and Mouth Disease Fears Lift Threats to U.S. Agriculture
Senator James P. Kem discusses the ongoing threat of foot and mouth disease to U S livestock and the border controls with Canada and Mexico. He cites past outbreaks, cites a 1929 California incident, and urges careful consideration of inviting Mexican cattle and fresh meat imports while stressing border and industry protections. He references U S federal and state veterinary efforts and cooperation with Canada, plus reader mail urging checks on executive power and constitutional limits on war decisions. He also laments U S air power delays in Korea and critiques potato dyeing and a red-faced agriculture secretary Brannan.
