Road Contract Awarded to R. B. Potashnick
The State Highway Commission awarded two Scott County road contracts to R. B. Potashnick of Cape Girardeau for about 9 miles of supplementary Routes 91B and Y. The total project cost is around 40,903 dollars with 20,056 for Route 91 and 20,847 for Route Y. Route 91 runs 4.2 miles west of Morley, and Route Y covers 4.8 miles west from the railroad tracks near Sikeston to the Scott County line. The work is overseen by Division 10 in Sikeston, with M. S. Gwinn as division engineer and A. E. Nance directing as division construction engineer. These Scott County jobs are among 23 highway improvement contracts awarded after bids on June 4, totaling 878,317 dollars for 63.7 miles of supplementary roads and one-tenth mile of Route 13 in Lafayette County, boosting this year’s highway improvement contracts to 21,055,813 dollars covering 1,166 miles of state highways. Other counties and states noted include Merce, Aimirain, Monroe, Ray, DeKalb, Saline, Cooper, Maries, Dallas, Barry, Laclede, Polk, Wright, Douglas, Butler and Stone.

The county health department plans dog vaccination clinics after seven rabid dogs and one rabid cat since January 1, 1952. An ordinance may require quarantining unvaccinated dogs, so clinics staffed by certified veterinarians and local helpers will operate in each town. The Chamber of Commerce board approved a $15 000 budget to support an expanded program. President Layton said full funding is needed and emphasized not cutting programs while aimed at raising income with citizen cooperation from the Sikes ton area. The meeting endorsed the Women's Civic Club Community Center project and new members were welcomed with prizes and committee reports. Approximately fifty members attended.

Benton Woman Wins Rural Home Essay Prize
Mrs Jimmy Riles president of the Benton extension club won first in the Rural Home essay contest sponsored by the local Home Economics Extension Council. She described her Benton village home and community activities along with her home food plan. Second and third went to Mrs Eugene Reed and Mrs L T Marshall of the Illmo Fornfelt extension club. Judges were Marshall Jackson Edna Francis and Clint H Denman. The winning essay goes to the state judging committee for potential national competition.

Corlew, a 1951 Sikeston High graduate and bookkeeper, previously held Cotton Carnival and Soybean Festival crowns. Local photographer Boone Wilford entered her in preliminaries and secured exclusive rights for Southeast Missouri.
