They noted Sikeston’s rates would still be among the lower in the region even after the increase and outlined a new schedule for residential commercial and school church lighting with a $1 minimum per month. Action on the ordinance was delayed for further study while noting existing contract customers and no past increases since 1939.

United DC-6 Crash Kills Forty-Two in Pennsylvania

Drought Broken by Scattered Showers in Sikeston District
Rain fell in the Sikeston district Monday and Tuesday lifting drought conditions briefly. The 1.05 inches helped late planted cotton, pastures, and hay fields after a month with no rain, though overall soil moisture remains dry and losses will be assessed later. Temperatures ranged 61 to 98 degrees, with 98 reaching on Saturday. Forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with scattered thundershowers. Some late cotton fields were replanted to other crops on lighter sand lands.

Local Physicians Meet with Hospital Officials on Cooperation
About twenty five physicians from the district served by the Missouri Delta Community Hospital met with Commonwealth Fund representatives in Sikeston to discuss cooperation with the hospital staff. Dr John Morrison and Miss A Pearl Smith led the talks as plans were laid for physician involvement and future staff selection. An executive committee chaired by Dr E D Urban was formed with subcommittees across programs education medical standards and records and a library. A Medical Advisory group will meet with hospital board members and the superintendent. minimum staff standards are being drafted. The constitution and by laws were adopted pending executive board approval.

Former Landmark Is Being Razed in Sikeston
Workers raze the old A. J. Matthews home at Scott and Center to clear space for a Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company supermarket. Built about 1885 for Mr. Matthews, the residence was moved in 1910 to its Scott street site and later occupied by the Matthews family before their move to a Portageville farm.

Cape Girardeau June 16 A major one day farm improvement planned for Thursday August 5 at Hope Bros upland farm Pocahontas will bring over 100 heavy machines and hundreds of workers. Projects include pond creation, terracing, contour plowing, gully repairs, concrete retaining dams and hedges of multiflora roses. An acre of wooded land will be cleared by bulldozers, liming and fertilizing will be completed, and grasses alfalfa and other crops seeded. Attendance is expected to exceed 15,000 from at least five states, with seeds supplied by the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce.

County Health Unit Could Be Formed In Scott County
W Scott Johnson chief engineer environmental sanitation Missouri Department of Health spoke at the Dunn Hotel to the Chamber of Commerce urging civic groups to back a county health unit. He said a 45000 person unit is economical and estimated Scott county would need about 15000 dollars with state matching. State law allows petitioning the county court to call an election on forming a unit and nearby counties Butler and Wayne recently voted for such units as others prepare votes. Truck Car Collision Near Murray Lane Causes No Injuries
A 1946 Ford dump truck driven by W. J. Ward of Sikeston and a 1942 Ford coach driven by Wallace E. Waters of Matthews collided about 9 30 Tuesday evening on Highway 61 at Murray Lane. Both vehicles were northbound and the truck was turning onto Murray Lane when Waters tried to pass. Little damage resulted and both drivers escaped injury.

Sikeston Man Causes Work Stoppage at Poplar Bluff Hospital
Ostar Stroud of Sikeston was demoted from foreman to common labor. Work on the new Veterans Hospital at Poplar Bluff halted for a day or two this week. Union steward Vel T. Chapman of Poplar Bluff allegedly caused the stoppage claiming crews were “going fishing.” After Chapman's removal from the union job, work reportedly resumed.
