Social Security Errors Cost 9500 To Area Last Year
Social Security Administration Cape Girardeau reports 9500 in the 18 county Southeast Missouri area caused by incorrect account numbers on tax returns. Lou Baine says $2500 was spent locally to correct errors and many are resolved after employer cooperation. Across the nation two and a half million wage items per quarter are wrong.

AT&T cable project reaches Chaffee area near Sikeston

Board Not Yet Appointed to Study Consolidation Plan
Scott County School Superintendent Frank Anderson said no action had been taken to comply with the new school law requiring a county board to study rural school consolidation. A meeting of all county school boards will be held in Benton before September 1 to choose a six member county board, with no more than one member from any township. Commissioner Hubert Wheeler announced Arthur L. Summers has been appointed Director of School District Reorganization for Missouri. The General Assembly passed a measure to elect a county education board to draft plans.

Sikeston School Enrollment Grows by 99 in 1948
Sikeston public schools report a 99 increase in total school age children from 2739 in 1947 to 2838 in 1948. White students total 2373 with 1266 white boys and 1107 white girls, while Negro students total 465 with 206 boys and 259 girls. Enrollment last term reached 2150, including 1804 whites and 346 Negroes.

X Ray Schedule To Begin Here In June Survey
Two mobile X ray units arrive in Scott county to survey up to 24000 people starting Monday June 14. Sikeston and surrounding areas host the initial 10 day effort with locations including a shoe factory Lake Amusement Co theater Railroad Park and Sunset Addition. Drought and hot dry weather over the past ten days have left Sikeston district crops below normal. Cotton is slow with half stands poor while late soybean planting shows only fair stands. Early corn grows but young corn suffers. pastures are short and burned. Wheat harvest to begin. barley and oats yield varies. Spraying corn with 2-4D shows satisfactory results.
