Southeast Missouri editors met in Fredericktown last Friday to discuss rising newsprint shortages and a proposed large postal rate increase. The gathering featured a fried chicken buffet by Oliver and Andy Ferguson and a rare civilian tour of Fredericktown cobalt refinery guided by the Ferguson brothers.

Funeral services for retired merchant W T Jones

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Haman Pine in Cape Girardeau for W T Jones 73 a retired merchant and husband of the former Miss Rachel D Smith. He operated Grs Coen Stores at Whitewater Thebes St and Cape Girardeau. Survivors include his wife two sons Gordon Jones and Fannie Jones and Gordon Jones, five daughters and many relatives.

Morehouse Resident Dora Griffin Dies at Home

Mrs Dora C Griffin a Morehouse resident for 45 years and widow of Rev W M Griffin died at her home Friday night after a five day illness. Born in Licking Mo she was the daughter of Samuel and Alice Greer West. Survived by husband Rev W M Griffin of Morehouse son Lewis Griffin of Morehouse daughter Mrs Claude Miers of Morehouse two grandchildren raised James Griffin and Barbara Louise Coleman four other grandchildren one brother Ben West of Tickling Me and two great grandchildren.

The Southeast Missouri Press Association held its 64th annual meeting Friday in Fredericktown. it voted to meet 65th in Sikeston in 1958 and again at Poplar Bluff for 1960. Bill Brannock Dexter Messenger was elected president. Wayne County Journal Bannui and other officers named. Raymond R Tucker gave the principal address. sessions ran from 8 am to 6 pm with meals and a banquet.

Jim Wallace to Be Honored at Banquet in Sikeston

James Wallace of Sikeston will be honored at a Friday June 22 banquet at the Rustic Rock Inn for twenty years of service to Southeast Missouri. Organizers from farm groups and state officials chair a program featuring Dean J Ho Longwell and Dr Julius Andy Anderson. Wallace, second oldest in the Missouri House, led opposition to rural property tax increases and fought for Delta research funding while backing school appropriations and the so called Filled Milk Bill. Nine Sikeston boys set for Boys State trip to Warrensburg

Nineteen from Sikeston and neighboring towns join thirty more area youths for Boys State. Sikeston participants include Charles Lynxwiler Lewis Roberson, Eugene Whitsell, Robert Harwell, Dale Grimes, Lawrence Tinbaugh, John Childers, and Ton Cants who may be replaced due to a broken leg. A 6 am charter leaves Rustic Rock Inn with three Caruthersville boys and two each from New Madrid and Charleston. Cape Girardeau adds forty. The full group travels in two buses, arriving Warrensburg about 3 pm. Returns depart June 23 at 10 am, expected to reach Sikeston around 1 pm.

Missouri Young Democrats elect officers at St Louis convention

Weber Gilmore, prosecuting attorney of Scott County, was elected president of the Missouri Young Democrats Clubs at a convention in St Louis on Saturday without opposition. Other officers named include Harald Vinge, Jackie Willi, James Trimble, Joanne Camm, Frank Akorn, James Paul Pine, and a national committeewoman.

Clarence Scott Attends Insurance Association Meeting

C Clarence Scott of the Scott Insurance Agency attended a special session of the Missowa Association of Insurance Agents in Watkesburg Monday. Scott, a member of the executive committee and chair of the constitution and by laws committee, presented the committee’s recommended revision of the by laws, adopted by the association. Edith Elmore, office manager for the Scott Insurance Agency, is at a three day school of instruction for insurance office personnel at Warrensburg State Teachers College.

Commission Reports On Area Highways

State Highway Commission weekly bulletin lists highway conditions up to June 19. Roads in the area show concrete repaints and one way traffic, with routes 60 61 25 and others under shoulder work or construction. Several segments near Sikeston Morehouse and the Arkansas line are reported closed or under construction with delays in Cape Girardeau and New Madrid counties.

Shirley Foster Wins Maid of Milk Title in Daily Month Pageant

Shirley Foster daughter of Mr and Mrs Bob Foster 820 Moore won the Maid of Milk title for 1956 from nine finalists at the high school auditorium Tuesday night Southeast Missouri's representative to the state Maid of Milk contest at Springfield in October was chosen The runners up were Ellen Cline and Peggy Barker The event was a feature of the Daily Aforth closervince sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce with eleven entrants and a dine and observation session at Ortus Restaurant for judges and contestants

Cotton Ginners Plan Central Alabama Mill Tour

Cotton ginners from Kansas and Missouri will visit Central Alabama mills to study spinning and finishing methods. Arkansas and Missouri associations join the tour organized by the American Cotton Manufacturers Institute with about 130 ginners traveling by chartered buses, based in Birmingham. Fred Carter, president of the ginners group, notes most attendees have not seen the mills firsthand.

Robbers Hold Up Wardin’s Grocery Near Keewanee

State Patrol said three armed Negroes robbed Wardin's Grocery at Highway 61 junction near Keewanee Friday night. Estimated ages 18 to 20, two dark and one light skinned. They fled in a car going north.

James Franklin Wallace Dies Sunday at Hospital

James Franklin Wallace 79 retired farmer died Sunday at Delta Community Hospital where he had been a patient for several days. A native of Ste. Gepesteve he moved to Scott County in 1902 and farmed there until retirement 14 years ago. He lived in Stheston at TL Matthews Avenue. He was married to Ida Mae Smith of Blodget and survived by 13 children and numerous grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Welsh Funeral Home and Wallace Chapel with interment at Memorial Park Cemetery.

John Lee Atwill 71 of Route Sikeston died at a Missouri hospital Friday. He was born May 20 1884 at Point Pleasant Mo and was a farmer. He leaves five sons Faye Atwill Portageville Gerald Atwill Ste Louis John Lee Atwill Kennett Paul Atwill Londonwin and Kenneth Atwill Columbia. A son Charles Witham and daughters Miss Nobe Phys Fisher Miss John Ed Layette Russell Mrs Mary Pickett survive with eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral for Opal Scroggins Held at Matthews Home

Funeral services for Opal Marie Scroggins two year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Roma Scroggins were held Wednesday afternoon at the family home two miles southwest of Matthews. The Rev Don Welch of Charleston conducted the service. Burial followed in Matthews Cemetery, with Welsh Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The child died Monday at Deha Communis Hospital.
