Work began on Sikeston's eleventh United States elementary flying school for army student training with initial construction on the air base. The project, to be completed by August first, includes six buildings and a 100 by 168 foot hangar to house 25 planes, with erection costing about $100,000.
Candidates across the county rushed to file for August primaries before the Friday deadline. Notable moves include Eugene M. Munger seeking the Democratic prosecutor nomination against David E. Blanton, with several races shaping up for assessor coroner sheriff judge county court and constable posts. The field features incumbents and long-shot challengers from Sikeston, Chaffee, Oran, Benton and nearby towns, signaling a heated election season.
These men gathered for a four hour conference at the Legion Hut to set plans for the air school to be started today by Oliver L. Parks. Architects general contractor and construction heads named in the photo included A. F. Lindsay W. L. Wimmer Oliver L. Parks Gene Fryhoff A. B. Woodbury S. J. Donovan F. M. Moore Ferguson Barns J. F. Gedney and W. L. Wimmer Jr. Construction began immediately after the meeting as shown with part of the building in the background already razed.
German forces push toward Paris within miles as Britain rushes troops and air power from Africa to Norway to aid France. Italy joins the Axis. Siam backs the Allies, and Egypt is expected to enter. In Paris, Bullitt’s chateau area sees heavy fighting. Bullitt remains in the city. The House passes a $1.706 billion defense bill funding 3,000 aircraft, 68 ships, and 95,000 more soldiers, while the Senate backs CCC non-combatant training and rejects mandatory military training for enrollees.
Temperatures peaked at 97 degrees twice but cooled to 93 the past week with a low of 63 last night. Showers occurred on seven days totaling 0.07 inches. Forecast calls for generally fair weather and higher temperatures over the weekend.
Sikeston debuts a new group the Southeast Missouri Troopers with a free concert at Malone Park starting at 8 this evening. Director Paul Slinkard leads over thirty members, including Luke Baker as president Charles Ardinger as secretary and Maurice Armstrong as treasurer, many young professionals.
Supt. R A Harper of the Sikes ton schools will be main speaker Sunday night at a flag week celebration held by the Junior and Senior Christian Endeavor societies of the Christian church. The program begins at 6 45 o clock at the church.
John J. Reiss peach orchard east of Sikeston reports heavy fruit load with trees shed to 50 percent. Ten boys picking green peaches over ten days to allow maturation. Prospects for an excellent yield and prices around 2 to 2.50 per bushel. Orchard holds 1,000 trees of J. H. Hale and Early Elberta. over 4,000 bushels produced since bearing began. State experimental orchard near Campbell grows 80 varieties with best prospects since establishment.
Thirteen students used six visiting and two local airplanes for private and written tests for pilot licenses at Sikeston airport. Civil Aeronautics Authority instructors from Lambert Field supervised twelve private tests while one commercial quiz occurred. Several local residents and pilots from surrounding towns watched the aircraft maneuvers and the day highlighted plans for an army air school here.

Approximately 100 Mexican workers in Southeast Missouri cotton fields will depart for the Southwest after planters S W Barton of Sikeston and J M Warren of Morehouse announced the move following a Morehouse meeting. Warren said workers will be transported home and that local labor will be sought for remaining harvests, with four workers reported at a Morehouse corner the next morning.

E F Deneke, freshly post operative from an appendectomy in a Cape Girardeau hospital, was brought home last Friday. His condition is described as satisfactory. Deneke is owner and manager of the Sikeston Radio Supply Co.
The air school planned for Sikeston will be one of eleven in the United States and is to train students for the Army Air Corps. Oliver L. Parks of East St. Louis will construct and operate it, with War Department approval. The project, a permanent, modern industry, is expected to boost payrolls and growth, drawing visits from Air Corps officials and increasing local business activity. Parks will bi weekly visit Sikeston, with next trip planned for Saturday. A local committee aided by Mayor Presnell and others facilitated land acquisition, including a nearly 450 acre tract bought for 26 900 60 an acre. The plan envisions an 18 month government contract term and a five year lease with option to purchase.
