SEMO Cotton Chopping Has Passed Peak
Leon Garnett, manager of the State Employment Office, says district cotton chopping has passed its peak unless heavy rains return grass and weeds. Chopping occurred on schedule due to good weather and available labor, with a 25 percent reduction in acreage aiding worker availability. Most work used local labor, with some Mexican workers in prior years. Wages ranged from 4.00 to 5.00. If crops are normal, pickers may be scarce despite similar labor supply, as laborers move to Great Lakes harvests.
