Southwestern Bell plans major Sikeston expansion
Ground breaking on Center Street marks the start of a long range Southeast Missouri plan by Southwestern Bell to upgrade service. Elmer Huber says new exchange space and dial operation will tie Sikeston to an interstate toll network, expanding to about 10,000 phones in ten years as two party lines end. The project, costing about 2.5 million dollars, links Sikeston with Poplar Bluff and Blytheville Portageville underground cables and will make Sikeston a toll call hub for the district.
