County Road Projects Under Bill King Milk Route
County road work under the King Milk Route bill shows six projects completed or under construction. Two are county sponsored and four by Sikeston Special Road District via the county. One county road west of Highway 61 near Kluge's Hill cost about 4500 with half funded by the state and a $2300 local contribution. Another county project east of the Bleda Perkins road northwest of Oran costs about 1538.21, with $375 donated locally. The Sikeston district’s largest project is a 3.414 mile gravel road through Moore Greer lands from north of Brown Spur to Morehouse and Salcedo road, costing 5250 with half paid by the district. Additional Sikeston roads include a half mile of Lake Bank road east from Highway 61 costing 750 and the Tanner road extension east from Blodgett and Miner road, extending about one and two thirds miles, costing 2550.

Red Cross to hold five day water safety instructor course
A Red Cross water safety instructors course will run August 26 to 30 at the Sikeston municipal pool from 9 AM to noon. Miss Margaret Donnell says the five day program trains instructors eligible to teach Red Cross swimming and life saving classes. Adults 18 plus with senior life-saver’s certificate may enroll. others may take the senior life-saver course in afternoons. Representatives from Kennett Caruthersville New Madrid Charleston Dexter Sikeston will attend. Ernst A. Vornbrock of St. Louis, special field representative, will teach and coordinate the program.

Two auto accident patients dismissed from hospital
Two people injured in a Sunday morning automobile crash near Cape Girardeau have been discharged from Cape Girardeau hospital. Charles B. Vaughn of Lewisburg Kentucky, 28, suffered bruises and cuts on the right side of his head and was released yesterday.

Marion LeRoy Palmer 22 formerly of Sikeston drowned Tuesday evening in Black River at Poplar Bluff while trying to reach a drifting small craft carrying his wife. He saved his mother in law, carried her to shore, then disappeared and later found dead. Palmer, reared in Sikeston, attended Sikeston High. survived by wife Lorene Wilcox, sister Dorothy, aunts and uncles, and was a Poplar Bluff dairy employee and former KWOC radio performer. Funeral Friday at Nazrene church Poplar Bluff.

Special Ticket for Primary Election in Scott County
Voters in Scott County will decide next Tuesday whether to liquidate the capital school fund of about $70,000 and distribute it to districts based on the 1948 enumeration. Each child would receive roughly $7.70. Sikeston would gain about $21,850. The funds may be used for incidental expenses and retirement costs, with distribution following state law. Similar votes are planned in Cape Girardeau and Mississippi counties. no county has opposed the plan to date. A special ballot will present the liquidation proposal with Yes or No options.

Assailants of East Prairie Man Jailed
Murray Scott and Alfred Walker, both of Pinhook, jailed in Charleston on charges of beating Clay Millar, East Prairie farmer, in a Mississippi county woods. Millar, 68, was struck with a club, robbed of about $3, and severely injured, including a brain concussion and mangled hand. Walker was identified. Scott captured in Charleston and Walker in Cairo. Millar remains hospitalized in Cairo with recovery ongoing.
