Sikeston Man and Child Die in Collision with Greyhound Bus
World War II dead returned home for final interment July 26 per Albritton Funeral Home and Memphis Quartermaster Office data. Lieut Carol E B Davis of Sikeston, son of Mr and Mrs Pat Davis, was missing in 1944 after his B 17 crew’s aircraft crashed in the North Sea while returning from Germany. Davis, born July 31 1920, lived in Sikeston, graduated Sikeston High School, and once worked as a Herald paper boy. He was a wing commander and captain and was survived by sisters Imogene and Mrs A C Chandler and brothers J W and Pat Jr.

Magistrate Court Handles Multiple Cases This Week
Several defendants faced fines and jail time in Sikeston and Benton magistrates this week. Carl Krebs, 39, New Madrid, fined 21 dollars for operating a heavy motor truck without proper weight permits. Haskell Ward, assault and battery, fined 10 dollars and costs, 30 days in county jail. Daniel Sugg, careless driving while intoxicated, fined 25 dollars, 30 days jail, paroled to Ira Shaffit. Willie Nelson sentenced to 60 days for disturbing the peace. Additional proceedings continued for Henry Smith, Ida Smith, and Tom Farley. In Benton, two fined and jailed, one for assault and battery. another fined five costs for a license-plate issue. Bud Green fined 10 dollars, 90 days jail, paroled to brother. Bill Lancaster trial set for next Tuesday. Bud Young fined 10 dollars, 60 days jail. second charge of assault and battery dismissed. Orvel Gleuck fined 75 dollars, 30 days jail, jury trial. Ellis Kirby fined 5 dollars, costs for license plate issue on a 1937 Ford coach.

Jim Bottomley Nine To Play Exhibition Games In Sikeston
Bolin, owner and manager of the Ozark Baseball Camp, will bring 15 Bottomley trainees to Sikeston for two exhibitions with the Junior Legion squad at V. F. W. Memorial Stadium. It is not yet known if former St. Louis Cardinal first baseman Jim Bottomley will join the games, and admission will be free.

Construction Starts on Building for Seven New Compression Engines
Brown & Root Inc. of Houston begins work on a duplicate power house to house seven 1000 horsepower compression units at the Big Inch and Little Inch pipelines north of Sikeston. The project, tied to Eastern Texas Transmission Corp, aims to raise daily gas throughput from 433 to 508 million cubic feet. The new building and machinery should be installed in about 120 days.

Drive Progressing For War Memorial
Several hundred dollars have been received by Commander C. H. Butler of the American Legion in a drive to build a World War I memorial through Legion Memorial Park. Contributions come from local businesses and individuals with more expected this week to reach the 32500 goal. The campaign is well received as a community project and tribute to the fallen, with support from nearby establishments and those farther away. Herb Walton chairs the committee, and contributions may be mailed to him or sent as checks payable to the American Legion.

Fatal bus crash kills grandfather and grandson in Missouri
Four passengers on the Greyhound were taken to Sikeston General Hospital after a late afternoon collision on Highway 61 near Sikeston. A Plymouth Sedan carrying F. M. Woodyard, about 70, and his two year old grandson Frederick Lee Keith, collided with the southbound bus. Woodyard attempted to cross the roadway, witnesses say. The bus turned around and struck a parked East Texas Motor Freight truck, causing a large hole in the bus. The bodies were taken to Taylor Funeral Home. The four bus passengers suffered shocks, bruises and minor injuries.
