Missouri Republicans named Murray Thompson of Marshfield for Governor with the Speaker of the House as candidate. Forrest Smith of Jefferson City led Democratic tickets for Governor. Major figures include Davis, Nee, Cox, Cochran, and others. Republican and Democratic slates listed with a combined primary vote around 350,000 and 400,000 respectively.
Voters in Scott County approved a distribution of about 70000 of county school funds to districts. Sikeston schools will receive over 20000. Unofficial returns from 20 of 26 precincts show 3249 for and 328 against. Cape Girardeau and Mississippi counties also voted yes, totaling 111000 to be distributed.
Sikeston office of Southeast Missouri Telephone Co begins installing new long distance equipment this week. The project will take six to eight weeks. Western Electric Co. has the contract. Fort Smith, Ark employees Fred L. Keller C. O. Elkins and W. C. Dougan are installing the equipment.
Unofficial returns show Sheriff Robert Hartzell Kimes re nominated by 2 228 votes in New Madrid County with 3 719 for Kimes and 1 496 for Shirley LaPlant. Joseph H Allen won the county for Congress, Yewell Lawrence carried county for state senator, Hedgepeth won county coroner, and Utterback Ice Reis Penman won unopposed or with strong margins in various county and state races.
J E Scott former sheriff led the Democratic primary with 2809 votes to Vern Watkins 450, Guy Drummond 529 and E B Walker Jr 283. Ashby beat Marshall Craig 2252 to 2176 for the prosecuting attorney post. Hudson Sutherland won county surveyor with 1459 over Douglas Hequembourg Jr 1433. Other races elected include Kelly Jackson and Marion Wise for representative and L D Joslyn for Congress. Forrest Smith won the governorship with 2055 votes while Dan Nee and Roy McKittrick trailed. Secretary of State R W Winn led with 1336 over Wm J Kennedy 920. State Auditor John Woodward received 708 and Louis Thomas 419. State Treasurer Morris edged Porter by three votes 807 to 804. Unopposed: A J Drinkwater Jr judge First Dist, Frank Johnson judge Second Dist, Ed DeField assessor, John F Nunnelece Jr coroner.
J R Dixie Paulling of Missouri University toured Sikeston and other Southeast Missouri towns this week to win recognition for the region cotton. He advocates a bale tag that travels with the cotton to market showing location of growth to secure full premium for the superior lint. Paulling has long promoted better cotton for the area.
Mrs Don Robinson hosts a birthday gathering this afternoon for her son Johnnie as he marks his seventh year with family friends and neighbors in attendance.
Leonard Stowe, 39, of Morehouse, an employee of the Himmelberger Harrison Co, was found on Highway 61 half a mile east of Morehouse with both legs broken and head bruises after a hit and run. He was unconscious on arrival at Sikeston General Hospital but regained consciousness in surgery. Authorities suspect a motor vehicle struck him and not a truck. The incident occurred about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Brig Gen John State’s Adjutant General announces mandatory attendance at field training this month for the 140th Infantry. Field drills will be held at Fort Leonard Wood from August 15 to 29. A telegram from Col Russell Boyt notes relaxed enlistment rules allowing new, limited National Guard entries after August 4, with active participation required to remain exempt from induction.
Carroll Owen, youngest son of Rev. and Mrs. E. D. Owen, was ordained as a minister of the Gospel at Sikeston Baptist church Monday evening. A sixty-member ordination council led the service with Rev. C. E. Warren presiding. The candidate was examined by Rev. Conley Scott. The ordination prayer came from Rev. Franklin Owen, and Rev. Chester R. Pillo gave the charge. The ordination sermon was preached by Rev. E. D. Owen. He attends Louisville Baptist Theological Seminary and serves as summer supply minister at Dexter First Baptist. He is the third and youngest son. brothers are a Gainesville Ga. minister and Sikeston coach Dean Owen.
The Scott county board of equalization will review Sikeston's real estate valuations next Tuesday after notice to City Clerk A C Barrett. County Clerk Watkins said Silmo’s valuations are under review today. The session will address the State Tax Commission order to raise Scott county town lots by 10 percent with possible adoption by Sikeston real estate.
T. M. Travelstead, a business visitor, spent Monday in Caruthersville. He conducted meetings and inspected local operations, signaling potential commercial interest in the area.
Paul C. Jones of Kennett leads Joseph H. Allen of New Madrid by over 250 votes for the Democratic nomination in Missouri's 10th District. Unofficial noon totals show Jones 13,262 to Allen 13,008, with 274 precincts reporting and absentee ballots to be counted.
Sikeston voters in Tuesday's Democratic primary endorsed three incumbents Sheriff Henry Malcolm Judge T F Henry and assessor Halter and nominated challengers in close races Felker unseated Wallace for representative and Harrison defeated Waters for surveyor Poe won county coroner nominating by unseating Taylor Malcolm led in all four Sikeston wards and had wide margins overall Halter led Baker by 151 votes Wallace trailed Felker by 515 votes with Camp taking 78 Felker 3 317 Wallace 2 802 official returns due Friday with Dempster unopposed for county prosecuting attorney.
W D Kelso 58 of Matthews died at Sikeston General Hospital at 2 pm after arriving for examination and being stricken shortly after. A farmer and grocer, he moved to Southeast Missouri from Mississippi years ago. Survived by wife, several sons and daughters and other relatives. Pebble Kelso 20 of Sikeston, employed by Woolworth, is among the survivors. Funeral arrangements pending.
Scott County Republicans mostly stayed home or aided Democrats in nominating their ticket. In 20 of 26 precincts the governor nomination results favored Thompson 121, Davis 117, and Thomas 31 with judges noting the Democrats’ lead in many precincts.
Bids for the new A P Super Market at Center and Scott streets are to be received tomorrow with the contract expected to be let soon. The 60 by 120 foot building will face south and include a glass aluminum front, canopy overhang, recessed main entrance by the parking area, and refrigerated vegetable display. Architect is R Paul Buchmueller. The store will be among the most elaborate in the Middle West and part of the Atlantic Pacific chain.
