A decisive meeting at the Scott County Milling Company office will determine the fate of the Southeast Missouri Jubilee. Murray Phillips will lead the session with Jubilee officers and active businessmen, weighing whether to continue the annual celebration after last year’s rain and mixed results.
Dr. A. D. Martin of Mobile Alabama opens offices in the Milem Building on Front Street to serve Sikeston patients. A Caruthersville native, he trained at the University of Tennessee Memphis and completed pre medic work at Missouri University. He previously served with the U S Public Health Service in Mobile. Dr. Martin, his wife, and their daughter Suzanne reside in the Lynn Waggoner home on Vernon Avenue.
Mr and Mrs David Allard spent Saturday through Monday with relatives in Illinois.
W L Haters, superintendent of the International Shoe Company factory, said a brick and concrete warehouse wrecked by lightning and fire last Sunday will be rebuilt near the site. Loss to the building was about 1000 with 200 to contents. Debris cleared. salvaged items stored.
Wade Tucker 48 farm labor organizer from this district is reported in satisfactory condition at Brandon Hospital Poplar Bluff after a Saturday night shooting at Peach Orchard Pemiscot County He was wounded in the abdomen and groin by Jesse Byrd 30 a Peach Orchard merchant who surrendered Sunday on felonious assault charges Byrd was released on 500 bond The incident followed a dispute over Tucker speaking from a car public address system near Byrd store Tucker a former New Madrid County sheriff and leader of farm labor groups says he was invited to speak at Peach Orchard and relatives indicate there is more to the case Preliminary Byrd hearing delayed to August 10 as Tucker recovers

Sikeston motorists faced chaos as traffic lights went dark when the timer motor at the city fire station failed. Superintendent Charles Moose said repairing parts will restore control within a few days, ending the spontaneous flurries of stop and go and returning traffic to normal safety standards.
Director Paul Slinkard leads the Southeast Missouri Troopers community orchestra in a concert at Malone Park tonight at 8. It is his first appearance in two weeks after vacation. Several special numbers are planned for next week’s program.
Mrs. J. H. Yount, ill at her country home north of Sikeston for two weeks, was transported to St. Luke's Hospital in St. Louis this morning by Welsh ambulance. Nurse Mrs. Baker Leigh and Mr. J. H. Yount Jr. accompanied her. Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Hedden plan to spend the weekend with relatives in Paris, Mo.
Alvie Steck, who confessed to killing Dr. Uriel P. Haw of Benton, waived preliminary hearing before Justice of the Peace Brown Jewels yesterday morning. He was bound over to circuit court without bond on Prosecution Attorney David Blanton's recommendation. Steck was returned from Poplar Bluff with his brother Emil Steck present. The court offered counsel but he declined. Bond was denied. Steck remains jailed in the county facility as prosecutors plan to proceed in July or November term.
Sikeston so far endures a heat spell with highs near 97 degrees on Tuesday July 23 and 95 yesterday, while overnight lows stay around 61. A cloudburst Sunday brought 3.37 inches of rain, with lighter showers Tuesday afternoon and a sprinkle yesterday. The forecast remains hot and dry with no immediate relief expected.
As debate on the Burke Wadsworth military training bill intensifies, the Missouri National Guard readies a three week encampment at Camp Riley Minnesota. Company K of the 140th Infantry will depart August 4 by rail for maneuvers with units from eight states, returning August 24. About seventy officers and men will participate, part of the 45,000 4th Army trainees, in a blue versus red combat exercise highlighting motorized units. Additional National Guard units from numerous towns will join, bringing roughly 1000 personnel to the encampment.
City council approves an experimental resurfacing of Scott and Stoddard streets and Maplewood avenue using amecite asphaltic paving. W. A. Wrage of Cape Girardeau to perform work with a five year guarantee. residents’ consent noted. WPA labor uncertainty cited.
